I know what the situation looked like to a random tourist. Can someone fill me in on what we've found beneath the surface? Something's obviously direly wrong.

I apologize, I have been tied up in finding artifacts from this world, but do you need assistance in destroying ghosts?

They do not seem to be commonplace in this world. Most accounts I have found appear to either be fictional, or be presented as fictional by the person reporting them.
