[Someone has seen one Changeling record too many for comfort. So many fake Changelings... And that's made her think.]

Does anyone know why this is happening? Shouldn't we have been back on the next jaunt like, last Liminal? ...Did the Arcana leave, or something?

[If she just had a vague idea of how to break out of Liminal Space, she'd have tried to go for it right now because it really looks like it. But she doesn't, and so she takes the thought to the network instead.]

This feels like the beginning of Phase Three all over again. There was a long pause on Jaunts and instead Liminal kept changing multiple times... and everyone who wasn't marked was marked.

My calculations of the calendar put us some time in December. They probably did what American radio hosts do and decided to put in a month-long vacation while playing the same five or six records of holiday music on repeat.

My current thought was that adding Lovers back in made them have to rework their schedule and they need time for it.

...Maybe they're fighting one another.

Or at least squabbling enough to ignore us while they're busy dealing with people who they think are actually important.

...you think they're really gone?

...Do you know if that has happened before that? A month long pause and then things changed?

Some of the psychic effects imply "absence" or "being busy elsewhere". I doubt they've gone far, but they may be paying us somewhat less attention than usual.

I don't recall that happening before. Sometimes we have three liminals instead of two in between but rarely this many.

Well, I guess that doesn't really change much then if they aren't far.

[Says the child and goes to find Beatrice in person. She does not want to continue this conversation in the least guarded place that Liminal has.

So not too long after, she wanders into Beatrice's mansion and looks around, listening hard for an indication of where the witch is.]

Does us staying here usually not last this long?

Usually there's two different Liminals and then the next Jaunt starts.

And we're on the fourth now.

[Something is obviously wrong. Or at least off. What even is the definition of wrong in a place like this?]

...So it doesn't necessarily indicate that we are entering a new phase.

What were the phases two and one like?

Quite possibly. They don't seem the sort to enjoy having their plans disrupted.

[So they should try to do that more often]

It's Christmas break.

You think they started fighting because we made them tie?

But how do we make them tie?

.......You mean like when [security] staff everywhere is at a bare minimum because everyone wants to take a day off at the same time?

Then.. maybe one of them forgot to start off a Jaunt or something? Or they're taking a break for some reason.

Or they got bored and decided to abandon us.

Shouldn't they send us home first if they got bored?

That would imply that they care about our well-being. [She isn't even being sarcastic here. Her voice just flat-out indicates that she does not think that that possibly could be the case.]

That would imply that they think in a way that makes them care. And they don't. They only care about us as gamepieces, if that.

[ Inigo knows she's technically right with what some people have said about the Arcana, but he still hates to think of anything or anyone as that callous. ]

Then.. at the very least they seemed pretty invested in the outcome of this whole thing. It'd be strange for them to just all give up on that at once.

[She is about to answer and then draws to a stop mentally, examining that thought.

She doesn't come up with a nice result.] Maybe we judged incorrectly what this whole thing was. They certainly don't seem to play by the rules that we assumed.

Maybe they aren't even playing the game that we assumed.

So it could be a front, huh? [ It's kind of weird to discuss matters this serious with a young girl, but.. well, Inigo's slowly getting a little more used to weird things here. Maybe she's just like Nah and looks younger than she is or something. ]

But that just begs the question what they were really doing all along.

Not necessarily a front. Just not the actual thing. Like how people have a big feast at Christmas but that's not what Christmas is and it's not even the defining part.

[Beatrice's largely been staying home since the strange record mechanisms seemed to take one look at her and give up on showing her something she hadn't already seen. She's quick to find her new guest once Kitty enters the front door.]
