It's not that they ignore you - it's that you're entirely inconspicuous to them. So if you talk to them, they'll still talk back - but they probably won't think about it too much afterwards, and they won't notice anything strange about you.

Like during the liminal where we saw our pasts, I saw myself in a world where everyone was an elf. I wasn't an elf, I still looked like I normally do, but even though I was in a big crowd, nobody noticed that I was different.
