Probably, but we shouldn't rule it out. Assumptions get people killed. ...They definitely could've been created by "sin" though. Those things look about as natural as the Titans. I wouldn't be surprised if they were meant to be some kind of weapon, or were some other byproduct of people being awful to each other.
