[While important things might be being discussed elsewhere on the telepathic network, there's one voice that seems more focused on one particular person. However, that one particular person isn't receiving... so it's going broad and wide, dropping in on various brains, more on accident than anything else.]

Usually he has better control than this, keeping his thoughts to himself or to whomever he's directly aiming them at, but he's getting increasingly panicked, and a wider mental net simply must be thrown.]

I can't find him, and he isn't answering me when I call, so... I'm assuming yes, at this point.

Does that actually happen? I haven't heard anyone say anyone has ever gone home before. Even then, though... he'd be home without me. I'm not sure he'd like that much.

[Yes, some of his worry is indeed for what Nick might be like alone. He's not stupid; he's aware how much the other man focuses on him, to the point of depending on him for some things. (He might be a little more in denial about the reverse situation, though.)]

Where else would people go when we don't see them anymore? [Unfortunately Melissa does not know the answer to this, but she is rolling her eyes a little at the obvious codependency here.] Do people even notice when we're gone, back home?

Perhaps. I appeared here months before a friend of mine from the same world did, but he recalls that I-- well, changed at about that point. Our situation might be a bit more complicated than most.

[Melissa does not have loved ones. She is immune.]

How so?

Those of us from my home version of Earth are essentially two people. We are, as far as we can tell, the reincarnations of someone else, so we have two sets of memories. Part of me grew up in Iowa and worked a decade in New Jersey, and another part of me grew up in ancient Wales, was bitten by a werewolf to save my life, and then grew to be second in command of a large pack in London three hundred years later. So the complication is, our first selves can forget our reincarnated selves. That appears to be what happened when I came here.

[...that's right. Nick explained a bit of that to her- that apparently her reincarnation or whatever was bouncing around their world as well. Which still disturbs her more than a little.

I gee. That... is confusing, yeah.

I know, it really can be, at times. It's a bit like those false memories we get on Jaunts, only-- more. So. I'm not sure if that's something that would happen to others, in this case, or if it's unique to my world.

I see. [pause] He seemed to recognize me, too. [There's a question in there...]

Er, well, yes. Did he tell you about that? We both knew you. Him better than me, you were mostly his friend, then, not mine.

He mentioned he knew someone with my face and name, but the details were not matching at all. [and she wants to know if you know said details.]

[He does know said details, but he's not sure she'd like him sharing them over the public network like this. He may be open about himself, but he also knows he's not the norm for that.]

Well, you were a reincarnation of yourself, like the rest of us. I imagine some things were in fact a bit different. I'm not exactly like the fellow I get my memories and abilities from, myself.

[No. No she would not. She doesn't want him to know them at all, is the thing.]

Hm. That whole thing is a little above me, I think. [she sounds amused, but... she is really not.]

It's above us, too, to be honest. It's mostly speculation, but it's the only speculation we made that fits all the data we have. Nothing and no one ever actually confirmed anything for us, that I'm aware of.

Sounds like one hell of a ride.

Even worse, imagine suddenly getting memories and powers and difficult to hide objects, in the middle of a city full of normal people. We tried to hide for a long time, but in the end, it just became impossible. Not everyone was pleased.

[In fact, most people weren't.]

I actually lost my job, when I went public, trying to present the other side of things, so people wouldn't think we were all power-hungry monsters, or something.

[Well, somehow the fucking vampires and werewolves and god knows what else of her world handle it, so...

Damn. Was everyone involved getting powers? That seems unlikely, to me.

Many of us. Some of us turned from normal human-- or normal animal, in a few cases-- to something entirely alien. Some of us started gaining robotic parts, instead of powers. A few actually found themselves in possession of actual giant robot suits.

And don't get me wrong, there were never more than a couple hundred of us, at most. More than that over the course of the years the process took place, but people were often forgetting their memories and returning to normal-- or worse, we did have several deaths.

[...she does not like that at all.] I see.

[And he's to the point where he's not sure how to respond to that. After a pause, he offers,]

I'm sorry, if that was an overshare... I'm a bit distracted, obviously.

[She just had sounded curious. Sort of. Maybe he'd misinterpreted... telepathy can be tricky, that way.]

No, it's fine. [she's just being terrible and wishing more of your people had died.] You've got a lot on your mind right now.
