Usually they're undead, but, any version of a vampire will suck the blood out of their victims to continue their long life. Sometimes they're that way by the Devil... or they just are higher on the food chain.

The stories from my world have it as blood. Sometimes they change the word to "life essence", but the idea is still the same. They drain you or kill you to keep living.
