A Warning [Shortly after liminal change]

Hey. So noticed somethin' a little off about the tea-rivers or whatever they are. They're in a particular pattern. Pretty much exactly the same pattern as a little town on Earth we went to that almost got us all eaten by tentacle shit-heads.

Think we might need to prep some eldritch defense and memory restoration and shit, if we're goin' back to fuckin' Harrogate. I got both, in case anybody was wonderin' or wanted someone to hit them up with either one once Jaunt gets goin'.

"Either is a ward against Yeller's pantheon in particular. Knowing which entity is responsible for... the present problem is important. These Elder Signs are a case study - against Cthulhu, Shub-Niggurath, or Old Yeller it'll buy you time and sanity. But against, say, Nyarlathotep or Axis Mundi or Nectarites, this'll do jack."

She folds her arms. "Also, did you notice what I just did there?"

"You only used some of the names," he says, guessing. "So... some of them are more dangerous that way than others?"
eldritchwheelies: (cold ceasar I evoke your equation)

She nods. "The working theory is that some of them turned their True Names into invocations, or enchanted it. The King in Yellow is his title, not his name."

She laughs, bitterly. "I'm not even telling you his name so you aren't tempted to say it, but it starts with an H. Cold Caesar, SHIZUN, and other ones are summoned by equations rather than monikers. I'm going to focus on the King's pantheon, because it's probably going to be them we run into, but let me know if things don't seem to add up to Cthulhu and Friends."

"... I understand," he says after a moment, nodding. "There's a... flavor... to that kind of terrible?"

"There are emergent patterns. Clusters of behavior and phenomena, known motivations. Cold Ones can only act through mortal agents, and by revealing or manipulating information; Cthulhu transforms men into monsters, and can be forced back to sleep; Nyarlathotep turns rumor into reality, but is doing it for fun and wants humanity alive; The King in Yellow and SHUIZN both make narrative tropes into laws of reality, but you need to stop the King's ritual and turn SHUIZNs into the story of her defeat."

She sighs. "Too much knowledge is dangerous. You run into magic that wants to be used, that's legitimately life-saving short term but long term aids the Ancients... But too little, on average, is worse. The limit is different for everyone."

"Does it matter how much other magic you know?" He asks. "I have a few kinds of spellcasting. If it makes it more or less safe for me, I should probably know..."

"Only if you cheat," she said. "There's a lot of magic so safe my government allows it in civilian apps. I wouldn't worry about anything from your homeworld. It's magic that draws on the Ancient Ones you need to be careful with."

"Got it. I'm positive I don't have anything like that."
