Inception or Double Rainbow, pick your meme
I'm talking with Matthew Cuthbert, one of the Travelers from the first time we were here. Azure is very insistent that he's Stone, and has been this whole jaunt, only Matthew himself had an overlay, one who died in the storm last week.
Has there ever been this sort of... layered infiltration before?

[She's crossing her fingers you'll drop this.]
But I mean, they are already, but Stone would be able to take the driver's seat if he wanted if someone woke him up inside the other Matthew.

but why even mention it if--]]There's a difference between sharing with an overlay and having someone else in your head.
[[... one moment as he. Has to collect his focus as unpleasant memories threaten to scatter it]]

to explain why she didn't just use it for Nabiki? but yeah, that was dumb to say. never mind.]Yeah. It's more like... hm. What will basically happen is that Stone would be the one that's awake, but after he's gone the other Matthew will be able to remember things he did or said out loud while Stone was awake. Just not any of Stone's thoughts.
I don't know if he'll remember anything Stone would say over the Network. Since nobody's double infiltrated before, I mean.

[[That. Really. Really does not sound good. Worse than not good. Starting to inch way too close to flashback territory not good.]]
public -> private (double protected)
[Switching to private and double protected:]
There's, um, full de-infiltration, what I like to call Ectoplasmic Embodiment, but. Uh. I'd have to teach someone else to do that. Because you can only do it so often and I used it to get someone else out of infiltrating as a Past Group Investigator.
Private level II all the way
Someone else was doubled?
Re: Private level II all the way
Azure is some kind of companion creature for Stone, right? That's probably how they figured it out too, because most of the companion creature we bring back come back because they bonded to us somehow. And this, uh, double Infiltration and half Investigation can fool the Network but not magic bonds. Or anyway, that's my theory.
I'm still kind of boggled that double Infiltration is even a thing. That's, like, stacking the minds three deep.

...makes me wonder if some of the Travelers from the first time here are being overlayed by our group as well. Or if everything happened in that brief Liminal chaos.
[[a pause]]
...If they treated Liminal as a world, that would explain it, wouldn't it? And explain why that short Liminal happened.

But yeah, dude, I think that's exactly what they're doing. They figured out how to turn visiting the past into a Jaunt of its own... so it's acting exactly like a Jaunt would be and Infiltrating Travelers as Past Travelers. Even if they have to stack those minds three deep.
I guess this makes most of us double Investigators, huh.

I still can't help but wonder, why this world.
[[As places they had been before had gone... this was almost pastoral. Low stakes, low risk, and very little possible gain. That so much had gone into sending them back here was just baffling.]]
no subject
And... I wonder if for them the, well, quietness of the Jaunt is almost the point? Like, if they're trying to do the time travel bullshit to do stuff on their level of things, it might make sense to do it when we've got something less dramatic going on so we don't distract them. Like the inner Jaunt is not so important as the outer Jaunt?
Or maybe doing better on the inner Jaunt will help them do whatever they were trying to do in the outer Jaunt? Some of the things that Riddick and Yukino said on the Network the other day made it sound like the first time we did Mars didn't go so well, because we didn't have all the Traveler tricks we have now.
And, like, we don't know exactly when Fortuna died either--although the Interface data from the Expedition almost looked like she did it in stages? So if they want to go back to when everyone but Temperance was alive and well, they'd have to get to it pretty early. And from what Nabiki's said, this seems like it was a pretty early Jaunt? Maybe it's their best choice of the first couple. Like not the highest stakes... but the one that is easiest to turn a fail into a win.

[[a pause]]
Do you think it's something like they were trying to pull in Questing Country? Only on a world where there was no reason to go looking too deeply into things?
no subject
... and I dunno if it's the exact same thing, but I wouldn't be surprised if Questing Country does have something to do with it. Like, I was talking about this shit to Raidou and he definitely thinks it's related. I mean, they were doing their mining during weird time shenanigans. Maybe they were trying to learn how to time travel that way?

The others were killed, if I'm remembering right. Seems almost... strange to think of one of them dying as if by illness. [[a slight discomfort, but very mild compared to his earlier one]]

Her win was what introduced more random elements into their game, wasn't it?
[["Fighting Fate" in this case would seem to be more in line with that, rather than being locked into a predetermined life...]]

Too many failures and lost chances... without hope, luck can't do anything.
