Inception or Double Rainbow, pick your meme

I'm talking with Matthew Cuthbert, one of the Travelers from the first time we were here. Azure is very insistent that he's Stone, and has been this whole jaunt, only Matthew himself had an overlay, one who died in the storm last week.

Has there ever been this sort of... layered infiltration before?

Just... stuff. It doesn't matter.

[She's crossing her fingers you'll drop this.]

But I mean, they are already, but Stone would be able to take the driver's seat if he wanted if someone woke him up inside the other Matthew.

[to explain why she didn't just use it for Nabiki? but yeah, that was dumb to say. never mind.]

Yeah. It's more like... hm. What will basically happen is that Stone would be the one that's awake, but after he's gone the other Matthew will be able to remember things he did or said out loud while Stone was awake. Just not any of Stone's thoughts.

I don't know if he'll remember anything Stone would say over the Network. Since nobody's double infiltrated before, I mean.

public -> private (double protected)

Yeahhhhhhh. So maybe not the best idea, sorry. You guys might have to tell, um, Azure that they'll probably have to wait a while to get Stone back.

[Switching to private and double protected:]

There's, um, full de-infiltration, what I like to call Ectoplasmic Embodiment, but. Uh. I'd have to teach someone else to do that. Because you can only do it so often and I used it to get someone else out of infiltrating as a Past Group Investigator.

Re: Private level II all the way

Yeah. I had a bond thing with them from an old Jaunt. So even though they kept registering as the other person on the Network, my bond said who else they were. And I told the person they were inside and the other person was willing to have the first person pulled all the way out of them. Not naming names because they both wanted to be private about it.

Azure is some kind of companion creature for Stone, right? That's probably how they figured it out too, because most of the companion creature we bring back come back because they bonded to us somehow. And this, uh, double Infiltration and half Investigation can fool the Network but not magic bonds. Or anyway, that's my theory.

I'm still kind of boggled that double Infiltration is even a thing. That's, like, stacking the minds three deep.

Oh yeah, jeez. I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have Selene to translate for Fidelite and Felicite. And yeah, Questing Country bonds are like, super strong like that when it comes to Familiars and Spirit Creatures. It's because they come from you. Or, well, for you. Selene refuses to be clear about whether it's from or for because I have to figure it out for myself, but it's one of those two. I think she actually might have really told Matthew's angels, which is kind of unfair, but, like, Matthew's angels aren't her charge, so she can do that. The price of getting to speak out loud is not being able to directly explain any Questing Country shit to your Champion.

But yeah, dude, I think that's exactly what they're doing. They figured out how to turn visiting the past into a Jaunt of its own... so it's acting exactly like a Jaunt would be and Infiltrating Travelers as Past Travelers. Even if they have to stack those minds three deep.

I guess this makes most of us double Investigators, huh.

Yeah, exactly.

And... I wonder if for them the, well, quietness of the Jaunt is almost the point? Like, if they're trying to do the time travel bullshit to do stuff on their level of things, it might make sense to do it when we've got something less dramatic going on so we don't distract them. Like the inner Jaunt is not so important as the outer Jaunt?

Or maybe doing better on the inner Jaunt will help them do whatever they were trying to do in the outer Jaunt? Some of the things that Riddick and Yukino said on the Network the other day made it sound like the first time we did Mars didn't go so well, because we didn't have all the Traveler tricks we have now.

And, like, we don't know exactly when Fortuna died either--although the Interface data from the Expedition almost looked like she did it in stages? So if they want to go back to when everyone but Temperance was alive and well, they'd have to get to it pretty early. And from what Nabiki's said, this seems like it was a pretty early Jaunt? Maybe it's their best choice of the first couple. Like not the highest stakes... but the one that is easiest to turn a fail into a win.

Yeah. Like, there were artifacts from two different Jaunt Worlds in her memorial space and, like, in some of the bits we got from interfacing, it almost sounded like she knew she was dying.

... and I dunno if it's the exact same thing, but I wouldn't be surprised if Questing Country does have something to do with it. Like, I was talking about this shit to Raidou and he definitely thinks it's related. I mean, they were doing their mining during weird time shenanigans. Maybe they were trying to learn how to time travel that way?

If she lost in ways that ran counter to her idiom, yeah. Could have damaged the fuck out of her. So that, like, even having achieved the world couldn't help her.

Yeaaahhhhh. Man, a slow death sucks for anyone, but it must be a special kind of suck when you're an idea.
