One of the local urchins is telling me he has information on the Zeitgeist. High likelihood that it's a trap, but I might as well try to spring it and see what I can learn. And perhaps I'll get lucky and it won't be. I'll keep everyone appraised.

Re: Privately to Malik
And yes, yes, I understand. You're in deep cover. You have to go along with the Wolf. I may be a fool and an incompetent and in badly over my head, but I understand that much. Do what you need to do.
[He takes a bite out of the bread.]
... I haven't been interrogated before. Not like this. [He hesitates a moment, before adding,] When I was trained for... what I did back home, they did have us experience an interrogation session, but it was with a drug called fast-penta. I don't think they have that here.
Re: Privately to Malik
There is a reason I have a high pain tolerance. What does the fast-penta do?
Re: Privately to Malik
Fast-penta doesn't cause pain whatsoever. It takes it away, if anything. It places one in a state of absolute openness and trust and makes you want to answer any question your interrogator might pose, although what you reveal is somewhat limited by how you understand the questions they ask and what, exactly, it is they ask.
There's a way to induce a severe allergy against it, so it can't be used on you without dire consequences that leave them unable to pose their questions. It's not unusual for field agents for to have it.
I don't have it. I was never a field agent.
Re: Privately to Malik
They may have something similar enough. I have not been reading what alchemy they have here.
Re: Privately to Malik
If they do have it or something similar... can you try to direct questions away from anything we can't let be revealed? I realize I haven't given you reason to trust my judgement, but I do trust yours.
Re: Privately to Malik
You are not the only Traveller to fail at keeping secrets or being subtle.
Re: Privately to Malik
Sera claims he just wants to make sure we're not a threat to the children. That this is about protecting his tribe. I know I certainly don't want to hurt children, even if the little devils have been driving me mad with their spying.
... by the way, I do love those robes you're wearing. They really bring out the color of your eyes.
Re: Privately to Malik
Idiots all of you. I am genuinely surprised you have not bungled more of these Jaunts.
[There's a pause, as he pays slightly more attention to the people around them.]
Technically we are whatever the Trumps decide we are. Were you there on The Grid?
Re: Privately to Malik
You may have noticed that, for all the myriad sins I've committed since the start of jaunt, I haven't left any written records besides the maps I left in your safekeeping and those I pointedly did not sign.
[He bites savagely into his loaf.]
Sadly, no. I just missed it. My first was being spectacularly useless in Purgatory.
Re: Privately to Malik
[Even if he had made some pretty good deals as Asfour towards that self's end goals.]
Hopefully the Wolf will not see you as a threat and assume the same of the rest of us.
Re: Privately to Malik
[Then, in a somewhat abashed tone of voice,] If you have the opportunity at all, would you retrieve the dagger from my boot and the miniature portrait from my coat pocket and hold onto them until all this is over? Just, the dagger's an heirloom and the miniature is the only picture I've got of Rish.
