[Later in the 1st Week, OTA] After Drizzt Gets Arrested....

[Ever heard resignation and embarrassment in your head at the same time? Because you are now.]

Before I say anything else: I am all right. Unharmed. Unhurt. Fine.

However, I have been arrested by a Council Enforcer and a member of the Elite Duskling Corps, although I did not catch her name. I believe I am being held near to the center of the city, and I am to speak to one Councilor Verena.

... I would prefer to abide by their laws, and I've only been arrested on suspicion because my saying that I didn't know what assistive devices were, which was taken to be a lie. However, is this truly the best course? I do not see any reason why they would keep me for too long.

[A pause, then a bit of a chuckle.]

Please make sure my father Zaknafein does not do anything rash this time. I am truly unharmed, Father.

I already claimed it was a joke, so knowing what they mean would be incredibly useful. And.. Quickly would be good. I appear to be an adolescent, so I hope they will not be too harsh on me.

When someone's got a difference or disability that holds them back or makes things harder for them, people make devices that help even things up. Glasses - you've seen people in Liminal Space wearing frames with glass in over their eyes ? - help adjust vision with special lenses, like in a telescope. Something like crutches or a cane can help people whose legs are hurt.

But it can be a lot more complicated than that, too.

I have seen many of these things over the course of my life. [Drizzt clearly is not happy with his next words:] Why would people be denied such things? Is it not important to make their lives better?

Well, in Nova Venezia, we usually built swords or guns into them. Maybe they're trying to avoid concealed weapons?

A true warrior would have many ways of concealing weapons. I certainly would not need a fake device in order to do so. But what are these guns that you speak of?

Hm.

Like crossbows, but the bolt is just the arrowhead, fired out of a tube by an explosion.

[A long pause.]

That sounds particularly dangerous.

Yes.

What else do you know of them? I wish to be better prepared if I encounter such a weapon.

I haven't seen any here.

But, the bullets they fire move faster than sound moves through the air. So they can't really be dodged easily. They're very loud. They pierce some kinds of armor... Most of them reload pretty quickly, and can shoot more than once before reloading.

[Long silence is long.]

... By the gods. Faster than sound? Armor piercing? Multiple shots? Why?

They're weapons.

[naturaltwohands]

[A frustrated noise.]

They're beyond weapons. They're insanity. I've heard rumors of Gondish priests back home developing weapons that use explosions, but nothing like that. Aren't magic, blades, and arrows enough?

Somebody probably said the same thing about rocks and clubs.

And where I'm from, almost nobody has magic.

At least those can be dodged. If a gun is pointed true, then you have no hope at all.

That's harder than it sounds.
