I think I'll be able to pose as one, really, but I can certainly talk to the cats that are already pets as well, and see if their elves have loose lips around them.
Precisely. That, and providing a little care where the Manticore wouldn’t. He was a terrible king of cats.
[Usually, Tybalt would make sure to make the usual capitals of “King of Cats” very obvious, and this time he makes it clear that those capitals aren’t there.]
Mostly because cats are stubbornly independent and clearly view all of humanity as their own personal servants. Not exactly the type of animal you'd think of as a the fealty-declaring type. Rats, now, Rats have a King, but they're a very different creature.
Whatever have I done to make you think I was human? I must correct that immediately.
The supposition there is also not entirely correct. I’ll grant you the occasional cat that keeps humans to serve, but most cats are looking for a different relationship with the humans they choose to keep company with.
As for the last supposition of the bunch, even the most independent of souls enjoys a safe place to bed down when they’re resting between adventures. The Kings and Queens of cats provide that for their subjects, among other things.
[and it wasn't exactly a surprise to learn that he wasn't human...but he'd been speaking more generally there. Even so, there's a bit of a mental shrug at the end of Tybalt's explanation there]

[sigh]
And we know it will be useful. Especially since there's no time of day when the council buildings are likely to be empty.

[Three guesses who Tybalt's thinking of. First two definitely don't count.]
Mm, yes, we'll have to be careful, but if there's a cat-lover among those there, we might have an additional opportunity to gather information.

[it's perhaps a bit of a stretch - but then Matthew's been getting his information from the pigeons. Who is he to judge?]

But that could be useful...reckon you could convince one of the councillors to make you their new mascot?
[private]
That is the tentative plan. If it's fully successful, I might end up privy to meetings of council members.
[private]
If nothing else it'll certainly give you even more time to rifle through all their stuff.

Was that what you were doing in Newport?

And fair enough.

I would tell you more, but we cats do like our mystery.
