What: The start of the investigation.

I’ll give it just eight hours, then I’m breaking us out of here.

We should do a roll call. Who still remembers who they are? And… is an ace of spades just a guy who’s really good with a shovel?

[ but that sentence is said a little more bitter and out of step to everything else. it's obvious he is not only unhappy about Hijikata, but there's a little more to it there. it's hard to pin, but it's like one might expect of a caged animal already pacing in restlessness as it's evaluating its situation and decided that taking this calmly is going to get it nowhere. ]

. . .I seem to be missing two, though.

If they're not answering, they're probably infiltrators... or they could have just passed out, or been distracted, or something.

I'll have to leave it to you for now since this bigshot guard and the doctor are my only accessible conversation potential.

Has anyone got anything out of the infiltrators on what was going on? Or are they all stupidly suspicious of wolves in sheep's clothing amongst their flock.

The Ace of Spades means someone's trying to have somebody killed.

And a lot of these people think they're important.

So many people like to think they're important. What are they all pretending to be this time, anyway—egos like that and the way they all act reminds of the terrorist groups from back home trying to control the world around them without rising into government positions of power.

Also, that's not very specific, by the way. When is someone not trying to have somebody killed? This Ace was in no one's possession at the time is was found, though, right? [ he sort of remembers something like that, but his brain is pretty fogged up from being sick. ]
