Is, uh, is this thing on?

Okay. Hi, my name's Jason, and I'm a... whatever.

It sounds like most of you have been doing this a while, but a bunch of people showed up the same time I did. That's routine for you guys. And that's great.

Anyway, if you're new here and you're still trying to figure it out, I thought we could have a meeting. Just the people who are new enough that none of this is normal yet.

I'm going to need somebody's help - somebody experienced - to set up a meeting place for us. But that's it, okay? I know I need some space to work things out, and I'm betting I'm not the only one.

I'm pretty sure you can all get in touch with me by thinking in my general direction, so, let's do this.

You're welcome to use the classroom. THere's certainly enough space. This does all take a bit of adjustment.

Why is there a classroom?

For holding lessons of course. The situations the Arcana throw us into require a rather wide variety of knowledge.

Oh whew, so not a real school classroom then. [ at least she hopes so. ]

I try to make sure our lessons have a purpose.

Well, as weird as it is to say this, at least your classes sound ... better than what they have in schools back home.

I try to keep them engaging, at least. And make it clear why I'm teaching the topic.

What purpose?

[She generally thinks that school are like the second worst thing after prisons, but she's not necessarily opposed to learning. It just depend son what is being learned. And how boring the teaching style is. And how long it takes.]

Interpreting the strange ways the Arcana communicate with us. Preparing for getting thrown into complex political situations. Having the basic principles in place to encounter new technologies.

[She's going to skip the complex political situations thing, that sounds boring.]

...What base principles? [Is this the equivalent of having gone to uni and knowing all kinds of useless things in hopes that they'll eventually become relevant?]

Things like if you understand how physical forces work, you can understand a chariot or a spaceship.

[Since they're as likely to run into either]

I don't need to know how they work in theory. I only need to know how to use them, if they're there and I can use them. Or how to sabotage them.

You're going to run into variations you've never seen before when we travel to different universes. If you know how the general category works, you can use that to figure out how to use them.

...Will that learning include books and writing and stuff?

Most of the book talk is because the Arcana like to send us messages by referencing that sort of thing in Liminal Space.

...But we can skip the book parts, right?

I really recommend taking it. We don't want Thorne to be the only one who can tell us the entire Liminal Space is a reference to the works of TS Eliot.

And it's probably helpful to know the stories so that you know what to expect from them. BUT.]

Not everyone needs to be able to do everything. If a few people know those things, then they can tell the others.

It's useful to get as broad a base of knowledge as possible though. We have no predicting when people will vanish here.

Plus that way you don't have to wait for other people to figure it out for you.

...Don't you have a trid library here that I could watch instead?

The yelling may have been related to the teaching.

They're held quite regularly in between Jaunts. And the classroom is always open if you want to review anything.

I don't know if it would be of any help, but I do have a decent amount of knowledge of astrophysics and biology, and wouldn't mind teaching people. Oh, and astronomy.

You'll have to speak with Lyall about biology. But we don't currently have anyone specializing in astrophysics or astronomy. I know a bit of the latter, but the former is quite outside my specialization.

...Yo. I'm, uh. Well, I ain't officially qualified, it was an overlay's field of study and he never sat any exams either except navigatin' a ship, but. I kinda know my stuff on astronomy 'n physics and all that. How stars work.
So, I dunno ... if you want a class running, or if the new guy - Matt, was it - wants a hand?

Alright! I'm better on the space stuff anyway. I'm closer to a xenobiologist than an Earth biologist anyway.

Of course, teamwork seems like a really good thing to do here. And it will be fun to get to know everyone, who arrived at the same day as me and everyone else too.

I'm not a n00b exactly, but I've been out of ambit for a good long time and only got back just now, and I can explain a bit of my perspective on what I'm tempted to call the metaplot.

Madoka Mawaru. I've been on three Jaunts, two of them pear-shaped, then only recently returned.

I'm not going to be the new kid police. You're welcome to come.

Definitely new, don't really have much to bring to the table, and have no idea what's going on. I talked to a disembodied voice who called herself Joan who encouraged me to ask questions.

Lots of questions, not too many answers.

Oh, and I'm Matt. Sorry if I'm skittish around anyone. Being a slave and locked up in prison does that.
