This is Bart's fault

[The person accessing the psychic network right now was probably not the best choice to be doing so, but since Noctis is bedridden and loaded up on Liminal's best painkillers there wasn't much he could do. Also his judgement had flown out the window.

There was probably a lot of strange static and noises in the background that come from a mind that wasn't entirely sure what he was thinking about at the moment, but eventually his own voice broke through. Kinda coherently.]

There's like...this cat, and he's super fluffy. I like petting him but I'm not sure if he likes it. Maybe he just tolerates me because Iggy is there. But he's really soft and pretty. Was everyone so pretty before? I'm so fucking high right now.

[It was kind of at this point that Noct really wished this was like the internet and he could just start posting memes and shit.]

I hate that angel guy so much. It really hurts. Even now too. And Iggy doesn't like showing it but he's really not having fun. You realize how hard it is to break his composition? Someone punch that asshole for me.

Astrals, I'm so bored.

Substantiating food, yes--but I have not learned wardrobe manipulation yet... I believe you are referring to the second level of that skill, yes?

Yep. You need to do that and food to play with goo, you need goo to heal, and you need healing to manipulate your form with Liminal Space. It's a pretty linear progression.

Ahhh, so it's more controllable than the virus version, then. It is fairly linear, yes--and healing along the way is good. But I also want to learn how to reach over the divide while I am separated from others I care about....

I can teach you that shit too. Which do you want to do--go there bodily or over the network?

Over the network to begin. I only need to learn how to detect others over the network and access private network communications before I can learn that properly, I believe. The second skill I am loathe to learn, but if it will help me speak across the divide, then I will learn it.

Yeah. It's not one I teach, sorry. You'll have to figure it out on your own, kiddo.

I'm twenty-... three. I will figure it out.

And I'm... oh my god, around twenty-eight? Twenty-nine? I need to do sit down at some point and do the math.

I mean, I'm not going to physically age any further, so maybe it doesn't matter my exact chronological age. It's definitely weird, though.

The passage of time is strange, only made stranger if you do not go along with it.

Indeed. ... although you could potentially teach me this. How to speak completely privately.

Right. I could! I mean, technically everyone can sort of private their stuff, but until you learn better it's really more like drawing a curtain around the conversation than building a wall. It's not hard to get past the curtain until people know how to protect their shit.

So yeah, I can teach you! But first, do you have computers in your world? I need to know what metaphors I can use.

Yes, it's somewhat like that. I can protect my own words but not the words of others, yet.

We have computers, up to the point of smart phones.

Okay. So you can think of protecting your own words as something like encrypting them, right?

Re: protection ii 5ever

[personal profile] thornsofmalkav 2019-05-01 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Right. So protecting an entire conversation on both sides is sort of like making an encrypted chat for the two of you--or however many of you that you want in the protected conversation.
keepcalmcookon: (1 hmmm)

[personal profile] keepcalmcookon 2019-05-06 11:19 am (UTC)(link)
Simpler than the secure communications that I've used back home. There's no two factor authentication to worry about. It simply works.

Yeah, that's the nice thing about the network working by will.

As long as you remember that fact, at least. It is however nice to have things simply work because you want them to.

I mean, it's easy enough for me to remember, but I've been here for a shit-long time. Almost four years.
keepcalmcookon: (1 hmmm)

[personal profile] keepcalmcookon 2019-05-15 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
That is quite the long time. Much longer than myself or most of those I know, other than perhaps Armin. I suspect he's been here longer.

[personal profile] thornsofmalkav 2019-05-15 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Much longer. He's the longest continuous Traveler as far as I know.

I'm not surprised, considering how powerful he is.

[Somewhat impressed, though.]
