...Maybe, maybe not. Digital avatars or not, they were interacting pretty directly on the Grid, enough so that SAGE was in actual danger.

What about the ones who turned up before that? My understanding from Naoto is that Moon and Sun were directly involved in the Orrery, but I haven't heard much about the other times.

But prefering indirect interaction does not necessarily translate to fearing harm. They borrow concepts from your species' legends, and leave us arcane clues. They may prefer to communicate indirectly because it is easier, not because it is safer. They would hardly be the first beings to use that tactic.
