Sooooo I don't know who's been talking to Kyan at all, but he's been trying to figure out what's going on with the Tachyon storm. Apparently, he's thinking now maybe we shouldn't try to outrun it. He's not scared of it anymore, apparently, and since the data in it is so organized he's wondering if it's carrying information about something...?

I don't really know what that could mean, but considering we're trying to outrun the thing (and sort of failing at the moment), I feel like this is probably important.

Do we have anyone trained in tachyon physics? I can do chemistry, I can talk neutrinos and quantum mechanics if I have to, but I don't know anything for sure here except that this sounds like a really, really bad idea.

Is there a specific reason why he is not afraid of the storm? I am reluctant to give up on outrunning it without a solid reason.

[Not that it really matters to him, since he can just run away to Liminal Space, but its the principle of the thing.]

Even if it's somehow carrying information, isn't it still some kind of storm? That doesn't sound like something we'd want to get caught in. Not with so many other people on the ship. My friend Jean told me we come back, but almost everyone here are civilians. We can't just risk their lives like that!

Then we should talk him out of it. Or get him to try it in an Outrider, with a few Investigators, and everyone else long gone in hyperspace.

[personal profile] detectivewonder 2016-02-19 12:55 am (UTC)(link)

Good. That's way too much risk.

On the other hand, if a couple of us wanted to steal an Outrider and wait for it...

Considering even the vanguard of the storm has been shaking the Empress apart, could we even survive this? If the tachyons interact with the sails, it might be easier to sail with the wind, but hard to steer. And the stress on the sails would be enormous.

... Assuming this is like flying in a windstorm, and not like something entirely different.

If we sent the outriders as scouts, they can't fly fast enough to be useful. And the Corona is uninhabitable.

[She's thinking about it.]

I'll go talk to Kyan myself. And someone should find an engineer and get them to tell us if we can even last until the storm.

Zoe was planning on trying to get one working, but I don't know if she actually managed.

And if not... there might be some that got left behind when everyone evacuated the Corona. Assuming we could get to them without, you know, dying.

He'd better have a very good reason as to why he thinks we should all go along with letting the storm hit us. Hunches don't count.

I'm not really in the mood to be a guinea pig for someone's curiosity today.
backwordscompatible: (glance)

[personal profile] backwordscompatible 2016-02-20 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
[Admittedly? She had that coming.]

Depends on what they're curious about.
mysunnydisposition: (steph: how about no)

[personal profile] mysunnydisposition 2016-02-20 09:19 am (UTC)(link)
Radiation poisoning? Maybe. I'm not actually sure if anything ever melted down to the point that it would still be dangerous there, but if it is... that's not something anyone wants to mess around with.
bluejade: (Default)

[personal profile] bluejade 2016-02-21 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Let me know what they say. [Jade is totally bullshitting -- she just knows how flying and sailing works when there's wind, and is hoping enough transfers to tachyons to not make her look foolish or get people killed.]
morbirdinterest: (> think deeply about meadows)

[personal profile] morbirdinterest 2016-02-21 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm... so he believes that the information inside the storm implies a guiding intelligence? And yet, who is to say that such a thing, if it exists, would be benevolently inclined to us in any way?
backwordscompatible: (proud)

[personal profile] backwordscompatible 2016-02-24 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
[She'll tell you when you're older]

We're talking purely hypothetical here? [Maybe] Say someone had a new trick they wanted to try out, but they needed a partner. Or a beautiful assistant.

In that case, I'd be willing to step aside and let them take the spotlight for the sake of friendship.
mysunnydisposition: (steph: how about no)

[personal profile] mysunnydisposition 2016-02-24 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
Are you immune to radiation?
mysunnydisposition: (bat: hmmph)

[personal profile] mysunnydisposition 2016-02-24 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Then... no, you probably shouldn't do that. At least not unless we can find some suits that'll stand up to short-term radiation exposure.
detectivewonder: by derogatory (by my calculations)

[personal profile] detectivewonder 2016-02-24 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll start working on that.
backwordscompatible: (THIS much)

[personal profile] backwordscompatible 2016-02-25 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I know. I'm just so thoughtful and considerate like that.

[A pause. First, to let that sink in--even if she was very clearly joking around--and second, to allow time to transition back to her original point:]

Unless Tachyon Storms are involved. Then all bets are off.
backwordscompatible: (chillin')

[personal profile] backwordscompatible 2016-02-26 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Too many people voted against it, huh?
backwordscompatible: (I'll catch up)

[personal profile] backwordscompatible 2016-02-26 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. Smart move.

[Kind of makes her wonder why the guy would bother suggesting it in the first place if he knew there were so many lives at stake.]

I mean, I suppose he deserves a point for initiative. ...well, maybe half a point.
backwordscompatible: (looking up)

[personal profile] backwordscompatible 2016-02-27 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
[If the storm is going to catch up with them no matter what they do?]

It...wouldn't be the worst surprise a Jaunt's ever thrown at us.
backwordscompatible: (Explaining)

[personal profile] backwordscompatible 2016-02-27 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
How are you doing otherwise?

I mean, pending doom and all that aside.
backwordscompatible: (admiration)

[personal profile] backwordscompatible 2016-02-27 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I kind of learned a new trick. But only by accident.

At least we didn't get caught in the process, though, because that would have been really awkward to try to explain.

[Speaking of experiments and guinea pigs....]
backwordscompatible: (job well done)

[personal profile] backwordscompatible 2016-02-27 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Slight...let's go with physical change.

It's probably better I show you in person. Meet up next Liminal?
backwordscompatible: (glance)

[personal profile] backwordscompatible 2016-02-27 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
In the meantime, try not to die, alright? I'll worry.
backwordscompatible: (proud)

[personal profile] backwordscompatible 2016-02-27 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Alright. If you say so.

See you when all this is over with.
