Wow. That's kind of cool. Kind of like how superheroes were totally a thing last Jaunt, even though they're not in my world. And Phillip told me you guys were computer programs once. That's less cool, and more weird, though.

No, I liked the Grid a lot more than the last thing.

And why's that? Was being a program easier than being a superhero or something?

I definitely had a better grip on the proceedings, that's for sure. That was my first jaunt, and... it was a really good one for me.

Even if I did accidentally end up second-in-command of a rebellion.

Okay, that sounds like it's got a story. How do you "accidentally" end up in charge or anything, let alone a rebellion?

Both the only good friends I had at the time were infiltrating, and I stuck with the one who seemed to need more help. Turned out what they needed help with was getting rid of one of the two major components of a program's base code.

Getting rid of? Like how? I know about programs in general, but not like, in the details-- and these aren't like programs I know about, anyway. They really seem more like Ed, my friend from back home who's an AI, and he's pretty unusual.

By programming it away.

Pretty much all the locals had Priority and Purpose, and were frankly baffled as to how anyone could manage without either of those. Purpose tells you what you're meant to be doing, Priority determines who can boss you around - and there's nothing stopping someone with higher Priority from abusing it.

SHIRO had issues with Priority, but couldn't do anything about it without seeing what no-Priority... coding, for lack of a better phrase, looked like. And anyone close enough to Naoto to get her infiltrating as them is going to find a way to do what they want whether you help or not, so I helped.

So did you have no-Priority coding or something, then? I mean, I can definitely see why you'd want to get rid of that, I hate being bossed around. Like a lot. But from the sound of it, that's the only way you could help, is if you had the right coding. Right?

Right - investigators showed up with no Priority or Purpose. SHIRO tweaked some things and edited Priority out of its own code.
