In light of recent events both during and outside of recent Jaunts, I think it's past time to start teaching our fellow Travelers how to defend themselves against telepathic intrusion.

It is entirely possible to guard your thoughts - and your conversations - from unwanted scrutiny using the psychic network that binds us all. It can take some time to develop the necessary familiarity, but if anyone wishes to learn, I am willing to teach them.

Unfortunately, it may not be a perfect defence against intrusions originating outside the network, but so far it has seemed to convey at least some protection in the majority of those cases as well.

So what do you need me to do?

We can start with a thought exercise. Envision a barrier around yourself, something to protect you and shelter you from view. It can take any form you feel comfortable with.

[Even if he has little psychic ability, this isn't too difficult - he's a sorcerer, and some level of ability to visualise has always been a part of magic. And he's an urban sorcerer, so his barrier takes the form of double red "don't stop" lines. It's no physical barrier, but to his magic it's a powerful ward]

[She's silent for several moments, giving him time to fix the barrier in his mind - how skilled he might be at doing so isn't something she can guess at, not without being quite a bit more intrusive than the lesson warrants.

Eventually, though:]

Once you have it set, hold that focus. Imagine it filling the space between our minds, separating your thoughts from mine.

[he follows her instructions - he thinks he's getting a handle on this now, but it's going to be hard to tell before it's put to the test]

Got it, I think.

Hold that in your thoughts. I'm going to test how solid a defense you've managed.

[Which she does, sending out psychic feelers to borrow directly from his visual cortext. If it works, she'll see what he's seeing. If not, they'll know he's been successful.]

[it's perhaps not the strongest defence ever - he knows how to make a solid ward, but he's not used to doing this kind - but he's got enough of a grasp that it holds]

[It's possible, she thinks, that she could punch through if she needs to, but it certainly stops a casual effort, and that's rather more than she'd expected of a first attempt.]

Good. It may be more difficult to maintain focus for the duration of a conversation, but that will come with practice.
