[Later in the 1st Week, OTA] After Drizzt Gets Arrested....

[Ever heard resignation and embarrassment in your head at the same time? Because you are now.]

Before I say anything else: I am all right. Unharmed. Unhurt. Fine.

However, I have been arrested by a Council Enforcer and a member of the Elite Duskling Corps, although I did not catch her name. I believe I am being held near to the center of the city, and I am to speak to one Councilor Verena.

... I would prefer to abide by their laws, and I've only been arrested on suspicion because my saying that I didn't know what assistive devices were, which was taken to be a lie. However, is this truly the best course? I do not see any reason why they would keep me for too long.

[A pause, then a bit of a chuckle.]

Please make sure my father Zaknafein does not do anything rash this time. I am truly unharmed, Father.

((OOC: After the top thread here.))

They can't hold you forever without actually charging you with a crime.

This isn't my first time dealing with police and being on the wrong side of the law.

Don't panic, don't agree or admit to anything.

Ask for a legal representative as an answer to any question they give you.

I'll be there as soon as I get your father to agree not to stab everyone.

Because if they can find a reason to charge you with something they will, and asking for legal representation is a good way to kill for time.

That isn't actually a universal constant. If their system's medieval enough, they can do pretty much anything they want to anyone without the social clout to push the issue.

...Do you really want his father causing a massacre?

Is that any less likely to happen if you get yourself arrested because you're treating the legal system here like the one back home?

It can't hurt to ask first.

If it doesn't work then at least we tried, and it won't be my first time being cohorts with fugitives or being one myself.

I'm not exactly the most popular Witch in Oz.

...Interesting turn of phrase.

[Not asking not asking not asking. Even if she really wants to.]

Why don't you get actual legal counsel? I'm pretty sure the rest of us would be willing to chip in our pocket change if the other options are massacre or potential witch hunt.

Or stage a prison break, if it comes to that.

It's not a turn of phrase.

If we need one, then yes. If they say we need one then we'll find one, but if they'll just release him to his father then that's even better.

Prison break is the last resort here, we've only just arrived and having to hide for nearly a month isn't anyone's cup of tea really.

If.

Speaking to one ahead of time would let you know what the rules are. If they'll release him to his father, or hold his father accountable for his misdeeds, or only take pleas for release from landed nobles or on the night of the full moon.

If they really are reading ignorance as malice here, there isn't a lot of room to make mistakes.

[Or maybe that's just an Enforcer thing. They don't know, and that's the problem.]

Technically, I am a landed noble just... not here.

[Okay so she was disowned as the Governess of Muchkinland, but then she got a castle of her own so???]

If you want to go look up the laws in the library or somewhere then that would be appreciated actually.

[And this is what she gets for opening her big mouth. Her least favourite task ever.

At least legal research can't possibly be as tedious as digging through a census, right? Right?]

I'll see what I can turn up.

I can send Chistery to help if you'd like? He understand people just fine, and he's good at retrieving books and other things as needed.

Thanks. If the size of the library isn't incredibly deceptive, I could probably use a second set of hands.

Some of them do things the right way.

But be careful with that impression. Building sympathy is interrogation 101.

Yep. If they get you to trust them, make you think they're in your corner, you're more likely to give them the answers they want.
