Missing gryphon [OPEN | Backdated to during the opening log]

HEY! If anybody finds a black gryphon hatchling, uh, please bring him to me? I can't find him!

[She's trying hard not to sound worried, except it's failing a lot, because not only does she sound worried, she sounds panicked.]

... or a black anything, really, cuz last time he was a six-limbed mutant thing, so I guess he could be something else. But I want to make sure he's not drowned or on a pirate ship or anything, okay? So just-- you know-- let me know!

[So what everyone should be looking for, in fact, is a little black monkey. He can swim perfectly well, and he'll probably be making quite a squall. He's just too far from Neeshka for her to hear him.]

... that'll make it really hard to find him. And really hard to keep trying to, you know, keep him around.

[She isn't sure whether she's alarmed or amused by the notion. Alarmed is possibly winning out.]

On the up side, he wouldn't drown. He might even be a flying fish.

Does he answer to anything in particular? 'Mister Limby,' perhaps?

Last jaunt I called him Griff. And he turned back into a gryphon as soon as we went back into that spacey-place. I still haven't actually named him, though.

Not at all! The fish near Seheron nest in the mangrove trees during mating season. Nasty little bastards - a school of them can flay an ogre to the bone inside of thirty seconds.

Let's hope your friend isn't one of those.

Wow, hey, you're the first person I've talked to who's mentioned ogres. You aren't from Faerun, too, are you?

[Hopeful question, there, only a minor distraction from the issue of her missing pet.]

Never heard of it. I'm from a sunny little world called Thedas - magic, dragons, and all the darkspawn you can shoot. Not all that different from Dolorosa, really, except it isn't as friendly.

It was cute, in a horribly scaled and feathered thing that might chew your hand off kind of way.

If this turns out like that time at the Wounded Coast I'm going to be very put out.

Well, I think if he were a gryphon now we'd be hearing more screaming. So that's one shape ....shifty type down.

Yeah. And I really don't think he's going to be a mutant thing this time around, either. So... something else, I guess. Probably still black, though, at least?

Yeah, never heard of that, either, but we have dragons in Faerun, too. And probably a lot of stuff that would count as darkspawn.

[Not from home, anyway. Damn. And he sounds so familiar, too, though she hasn't placed from where yet.]

Anyway, uh, I'm Neeshka. I'm a tiefling. That means my grandpa or somebody was a demon.

This may be a silly question, but I do have to ask. How would you know him if you saw him?

Look on the bright side: if it comes from another world, we probably don't have to worry about its mother swooping down to seek bloody vengeance for the abduction of her young.

[Which is possibly the most dramatic description of 'attack by small furry animal' he's ever given.

Or possibly not. It's Varric, after all.]

I used to think my grandfather was a demon. Turned out it was just digestive troubles - a bad poisoning in his youth. Word to the wise: if a carta member you're in hock to offers you a drink, don't drink it.

[There's a gloss of tension underneath the flippancy. Demons are traditionally Very Bad News, after all, though having seen the overreaction of some of the Chantry's finest, he's not entirely certain how seriously he should take her explanation.

For all he knows, that's her world's way of explaining magical ability.]

He said, more or less guaranteeing it to happen. And probably happen to me personally!

.. er. I'm fairly sure the natives here might start to feel a little surprised if they would come across either of those things.

[ Don't get him wrong. Gryphons are pretty normal to him, and even... limbed.. mutant things sound a lot like Risen, but he's pretty sure by now that not all worlds are used to weird things like that. ]

Look on the bright side, Hawke. The brave hero fighting off a swarm of monsters from beyond this world to save the maiden fair...it makes for a good story. A little derivative, maybe, but we can always put a twist on it.

I'm not sure if I ought to be flattered or horrified that you haven't found anyone else to be the focus of these - [ cough ] - completely realistic renderings of actual events.

Sure, I'll remember that. I mean, it's kind of smart not to drink stuff people are offering you anyway, when you owe them money, so. Easy enough.

[She lets him think whatever he wants, for now, in regards to the demon thing. It's not like he'll see the horns and tail until the next time they're in liminal space, anyway.]
