OTA, Midday After Murderelf Attack

[Drizzt's mental voice is steady but urgent, his message quick and to the point. He also could care less if anyone figures out what prompted him to finally ask about such things.]

I learned of both the ability to heal the mind and of Green Magic, which has spells of healing and nature. I wish to learn both, urgently so. I have only a handful of skills granted through Liminal Space to trade, although I can provide instruction in both close and ranged combat as well as the ways of a ranger.

If you can help me and are willing to trade, I would be grateful.

No, the ability to see another's memories or share your own and the ability to heal another's mind are separate. It can make the process easier, if the wounds are caused by traumatic memories, but it is not a necessary step - especially if, as in your case, the healer is already familiar with the wounded party.

If you wish a demonstration on yourself, I can provide one - it will doubtless be an aid to understanding the process. I have a room in the residential section of the Workshop. You are welcome to come speak with me there.

The less he has to share, the better. Zaknafein has lived for four centuries, and I suspect there are many memories that he would not wish to share with me, his beloved son.

[Drizzt wants to double-check, and he sounds slightly surprised by it.]

[There's a faint trace of amusement in her reply - she's definitely noticed that surprise.]

It is simply surprising to hear a stranger offer to spend what might be a good portion of their time without at least some delay. I suppose there's only so much to do here in this place.

Only so much to do, and the knowledge that our time here is limited, and there is no guarantee that we will be able to continue lessons during the next Jaunt. This seems too important to put off, and risk having an ill-timed Infiltration catch us by surprise.

[It's said as a compliment and with the utmost respect.]

Where should I meet you?

[The directions she gives to the room she's currently staying in are brief, but easy enough to follow - particularly if Drizzt is familiar with the workshop already.]

[And they are indeed easy, as he also resides in the workshop. It isn't more than few minutes before he knocks on the door, or if the door is open, the door frame.]

[The door is shut, but it swings open readily enough at his knock, though the room's inhabitant is seated a small desk across the room.]

Please, come in.

[Her audible voice is similar in sound to her telepathic one, but the words carry a faint accent that hadn't been present when they'd spoken mind-to-mind.]

[Drizzt is wearing just a simple tunic, pants, and a pair of socks. He's left his equipment with Guenhwyvar, considering this is about difficult memories. Also, it's just nice to be without his equipment.

When the door opens, he smiles and walks in with a bow of his head in respect. Gently, he closes the door behind him. Drizzt does note the accent, but it's easy enough to understand her, and he doesn't focus on it.]

[The room is neatly kept, like a soldier's quarters or a berth on a ship, the only clutter coming in the form of the books and notes on the desk. Liara's out of armor, dressed in the leggings and long top that most closely simulate her preferred mode of dress; only the strange wrist cuff on her left arm hints at her native level of technology. The guns and armour have been tucked carefully away.]

[Hello, fellow neat person. This looks quite a bit like Drizzt's portion of the room that he shares with his father. Of course, his father's side is pretty Spartan, but Drizzt at least has some books.]

[Drizzt looks for a place to sit, particularly a chair. He's a little too awkward to sit on someone's bed easily.]

How should we begin?

[There isn't any spare furniture, but there is a thick woven rug that looks to be fairly comfortable to sit on.]

With an explanation, I think. Better to give some context before launching into demonstration.

[That will do. Drizzt walks over to it and settled on it legs half bent in front of him.]

As do most things.

[It's agreement, not sarcasm, which is necessary to point out when it's coming from Drizzt's mouth. He's ready to listen.]

[She settles across from him, legs neatly crossed, hands resting on her knees.]

Consider first that the purpose of psychic protection is not only to prevent others from spying on your conversations, but also to protect your mind from harm, either by another Traveler, or by some of the entities we may encounter on our travels. Psychic healing is an outgrowth of this aspect - where its precursor prevents new damage, it works to buffer the pain of wounds that have already been inflicted, and allow the mind to heal.

[Drizzt crosses his own legs as she sits, to give them a bit more distance and room as well as to sit straighter and more seriously. The lesson is starting, and it is one that Drizzt wishes to take incredibly seriously. His father needs him to do so. Drizzt nods at what she says, staying silent as he absorbs the lesson.]

It is delicate work. You cannot heal by brute strength - it requires patience, and a degree of understanding of the person you wish to aid. You do not need to know the specifics of the source of the pain you are sheltering them from, but it is much more likely to be successful if you know that you are aiding them with nightmares, or depression, or recurring fears.

[Drizzt smiles some in satisfaction.]

Then this will work. I know my father well and have the patience to work with him.

[He's not one for patience, but for his father? He will be whatever is necessary.]

[She inclines her head slightly, in acknowledgment if not necessarily agreement. She doesn't know him well enough to know how likely he is to be successful, after all.]

Do you have any skill with physical medicine?

[Drizzt believes that he does, and is mostly correct in his assumptions.]

I do. I have learned of some basic field dressing and how to splint for broken bones. Also of basic anatomy, although clerics would know it in far greater detail.

[It's enough for the lesson, at least, though she flinches a little at the thought of medicine as dictated by a religious order.]

Then you know that even after the initial healing has been done, full recovery can take time - and the deepest wounds may still scar, regardless of the skill of the medic.

[Many religious orders with their own edicts. Actually, almost everyone follows some god or another. Yeah.]

I do. After four centuries of torment, perhaps scarring is the best I can hope for, but I still must try.

Your species lives that long?

[There's a note of genuine surprise in her voice - as far as she knows, outside of Jaunts, her fellow Travelers have all been people who would expect their lifespan to stretch a century at the outside, or occasionally people who had belonged to short-lived species before being transformed into something else entirely.]
