A Very Important Safety Lesson

Hokay, so. Now is the time for a network announcement that has nothing to do with ‘holy shit possibly Harrogate,’ other than I can share the load of beefing up mental firewalls. Otherwise network-fu isn’t so much my thing. Instead, I have a couple follow-ups to Riddick’s ‘hey we can turn Liminal Space into usable electricity’ discovery.

Thing One, during the last jaunt I figured out how to properly wire my rooms, so you can bring your own plugs. The downside is I think it has a measurable limit in terms of energy output, so I didn’t rewire the server room for Liminal Intranet. That’s still on… hell, I don’t know, cognitive power? I expect it to work so it works?

Thing Two, and slightly scarier: It’s possible to draw some serious shock power out of Liminal Space, if you play your cards right. The really bad news here is that shock power is measurable in milli-amps. Very Important Safety Lesson, guys – amps can absolutely seriously hurt or kill people. I’m reasonably sure anything fatal would take a deliberate effort, but it would be very easy to contact-paralyze someone by accident.

I’m not here to tell people not to chase it in the first place or whatever. Just… be careful. It’s one thing to have another weapon in your arsenal and another thing entirely to risk accidentally Flooring someone.

Some of us were born in the actual Middle Ages, thank you.

And some of us didn't live a thousand years after that and then have an eventful afterlife as the subject of what I'm told is called an internet fandom.

Indeed. In my time as well, the only 'electricity' we have is lightning.

Your voice is a bit familiar, good sir. You're not an associate of Monsieur Alcuin nó Delaunay, are you?

I am, yes. Anafiel Delaunay, my lady. I have had the honor of having Alcuin as my pupil and betimes my secretary. Who might I have the pleasure of addressing?

I am Beatrice, the Golden and Endless Witch, and a friend of Alcuin's ever since I arrived here. It's more than a pleasure to meet you, inasmuch as this counts as a meeting.

Oh no, the pleasure is mine, Lady Beatrice. Alcuin and his lady have told me much of you; Thorne especially seems to be quite fond of you. She has recommended I read your biography.

I'm glad someone else is promoting for me. Calling it a biography is a bit misleading, though...it's more a tale that happens to be largely about me, and people I knew, without the exhaustive and dry recapitulation of my life most biographers try for. I do quite recommend it, though. Even the parts I didn't write myself.

I have been enjoying it thus-far, although I am only at the part where young Maria brings your message to the Ushiromiya family. I have been taking quite a few notes as I go along. The early part of this is quite full of details of the family and their circumstances and I suspect that knowing them might aid in solving the mystery. Thorne has said that she wishes to watch me attempt it. Should I report my thoughts back to you as well?

Ahaha, if you wish. Knowing someone with the cleverness and will to think about it is entertaining the story is enough, though.

Incidentally...my Epitaph is probably impossible for someone without some knowledge of the Far East. Sorry about that, but it was meant for people who knew Kinzo personally. Don't get too hung up on it, at least before the third volume.

I see. I will stop trying to solve that part, then, given that what I know of those regions east of Khebbel-im-Akkad is very little, beyond the fact that the pottery, silk, and spices of Ch'in are among the finest and what exists in our religious writing about the time Elua and his Companions spent in Bhodistan.

[Look, he's a very smart medieval man but he still only can draw upon the resources of a medieval man when it comes to different countries.]

When I have finished the first volume, perhaps I shall come to you with my thoughts?

Also, your world apparently uses place names that were either barely in use a thousand years ago in mine, or come from entirely different sources altogether.

Still, I'd like that. Drop by my Room any time, in fact. It's the mansion with the One-Winged Eagle symbols all over the door.

Ah yes, I have noticed that. However, I don't know all your world's names for such places--just that Alba is England, my own Terre d'Ange is France, and Aragonia is Spain--so I use the ones I'm familiar with instead.

I look forward to meeting you in person, Lady Beatrice.
