Since everyone else is responding to this with understanding or complaining, I'll try to break the trend and say that your return to your usual habits is reassuring.

You were quite clearly a very different person as your overlay. He was dangerous enough to kill people, including ones who really should have known better, and he probably wasn't in the habit of screaming apologies.

You, however, are, and you're about as dangerous as the average chameleon.

Frankly, I think everything turned out for the best, at least regarding Malik. If your overlay was up to more of the disappearances than that, though...well, you're not him.

...most of the time, people - specifically, people, not just demons who do things because of their nature - sin because they have some higher priority that overrides doing what they know is the right thing. A need for money, or love, or revenge, for example. Sometimes it's as simple as being miserable and needing to make others miserable to feel less alone.

It's very easy for humans or merpeople to justify to themselves the evil that they do. All they need is a reason.
