Is there something I should be doing in a situation like this? I must admit I am a little, ah... confused at the moment. Perhaps I could be watching over something for somebody if worst comes to worst?

I would have stuck around and made sure that their pack was safe for a while. Which includes making sure that there's enough game in the area, or that they have enough to eat otherwise.
