This is "Liminal Space" - a pocket between worlds and universes created by our enigmatic hosts. We call ourselves "Travelers" because that is, in a sense, what we are doing. Traveling between worlds in order to assist the local populations somewhat surreptitiously, if at all possible, and in doing so wind up assisting our hosts in decisions they must make.
Depends upon your point of view. They are... concepts, more than anything. Clusters of ideas given form. Have you heard of the card game tarotchi? More commonly known as tarot?
