the next big contribution to liminal science! [backdated to yesterday]
[Remember all those baby 'movies' that Wash has been sensory livestreaming at everyone? This is like that, only instead of the really cute biracial baby, everybody's seeing a Latina twenty-something in a hoodie with pink and black hair. And with Alcuin sending it to everyone instead of Wash, of course.]
Hi guys! For those of you who don't know, I'm Thorne. That's with an 'e' on the end. And I'm here to talk to you about the newest development in Liminal Science. Specifically, I'm here to talk about goo.
Even more specifically, I'm here to talk about Matthew's goo.
For the new people, basically what happened is that due to a terrible case of mistaken identity, Matthew and Altaïr kind of ended up, well, dead for a little bit. And what happens when you're dead in Liminal Space is that the floor swallows you up and you spend a week there in a sticky cocoon getting your body repaired until it spits you out with some goo in your wounds that, like, will turn into your actual flesh afterward while your friends are first-aiding you. Alcuin was Matthew's medic and I assisted him and Matthew let both of us get a sample of the goo from his wounds while we were treating him.
[She holds up a vial of, well, goo.]
That would be this stuff! Zoe also grabbed us one of the disembodied limbs that got spat up when they came out of the floor. And thanks to Souji, who lent us his awesome infoglasses, we were able to examine both the goo and the limb and find out some pretty neat stuff about them.
So, first of all, as one might guess, the disembodied limb was, in fact, made from the goo. Which, as noted, was the stuff the Arcana put in Matthew's and Altaïr's wounds. But what I also found out when I was trying to replicate the goo is that the goo isn't just Arcana bandaids.
The goo is actually sort of the ur-substance that liminal space is made from.
[Thorne holds up a glass jar of more goo.]
I'm calling it ectoplasm for now. As far as I can tell, it's basically liminal material in its natural state. When we use liminal manipulation, we're creating this stuff and automatically shaping it into other stuff before we even notice that it's goo. The hardest thing about making more goo is stopping in between the create the goo and the shaping the goo step.
Actually, if you stop a little later down the line, you can make something like this.
[Thorne holds up... well, it looks like some sort of square thing with circuitry inside.]
This is semi-solid gelatinous ectoplasm, one step away from taking form as a liminally created object. This is actually this.
[She holds up what the 21st century travelers might recognize as a Nintendo 3DS.]
Or rather, this 3DS was made from that ectoplasm, using it as a mold and then removing it from the ectoplasm once it was finished.
See, me and Lyall and Claudia have been working for the last six months between Jaunts dissecting a 3DS I brought back from Newport and Interfacing with its circuitry and programming, trying to learn it well enough to replicate it, so eventually we can hand them out to whoever wants them, along with games that we're interfacing with the cartridges. It's kind of slow going, but we've learned enough to replicate the handheld itself using liminal manipulation if not the the games yet. Anyway, because consoles are complicated, we thought we'd be the only people who could make them.
That is until I figured out about using ectoplasm as molds. Because here's the thing. You can hand an ectoplasmic mold to someone else and that other person can hold it and begin to liminally manipulate inside the mold and the liminal material will fill right in, becoming the object the mold would have becoming and the person using the mold doesn't even need to understand what they're making.
I know this for a fact, because this 3DS you're seeing was created by Alcuin using my mold as a sort of Liminal Template and his understanding of how circuitry works has a lot to do with small people living in computers.
So. Yeah. This is really fucking cool, you guys. And I'm totally willing to teach people how to make molds like this. Especially my partners on the 3DS project and anyone else who understands complex electronics or machinery that not everyone else understands.
Oh yeah. One last thing. In non-science non-goo news, Rise figured out it was Valentine's Day earlier today. I've got my small single-screen movie theatre set up between the whack-a-mole and the game where you knock clowns over and in about an hour I'm going to be doing a screening of The Princess Bride. Chocolate snacks will be on the counter in the lobby. Everyone's totally invited if they want.

Just you. Claudia has enough to be busy with.
[ Claudia was always surrounded by computers, tinkering on something or other. And she'd said she was working on how to generate "power", whatever that meant. She was not obligated to help Thorne pay him back. At any rate, Altaïr did not want more people than necessary looking at these particular drawings. ]
First I need to know if it can be done. Meet me in Malik's rooms, I can show you what I need.
psychic -> action
[It's five minutes late when she pokes her head into Malik's rooms.]
So what's the thing?
action
Do not turn the pages, they are fragile.
[ Three centuries of being passed from Assassin to Assassin to Templar to Assassin would do it. He also does not want her reading the rest of his Codex. His voice is cold, too. ]
Malik may be able to do it the longer way if you cannot.
Re: action
I... would have to study these and practice making the component parts for a while before I could make one by hand. And then I'd have to practice by hand for a couple times before I could make the mold. But eventually I could.
[She bites her lip, unsure if she's going to dig herself deeper by saying this, but on the other hand, it would save time.]
Altaïr... if Malik understands these well enough to make by hand, he ought to be able to make them with liminal manipulation without needing a mold. I mean, if you want the mold anyway, I'll teach myself them so I can do it, but if you just need one relatively right away, Malik will be more useful.
Re: action
Very well. I will find some other use for this ability. Go. Enjoy your moving theatre.
[ Words that should have been cordial, but were about as comforting as a block of ice. ]
Re: action
[She can't do this anymore. She runs off.]
