[A few days into the Liminal, Jean has a question to make.]

Is there anyone who could help me learn how to make created spaces permanent? I've created a stable for my Spirit Animal to stay in, and it would be great if I could make them permanent, in case she's left behind while I'm on a jaunt...

That said, anyone who has a horse, or other animals who like staying in stables, you're welcome to house yours there. There are several stalls and I make sure there's enough hay and water around. Guaranteed daily cleaning as well, or else Captain Levi will have my head...

Well! She's more colorful than I remember, but it looks good. Can she hear me on this thing?

Her mane was different colored on the Jaunt. Where she comes from, being this colorful isn't strange.

[Not that it would have been that weird in the land of myths, but details.]

She's not on the network, but she can actually talk if you're in the same place as her. Well, that's also through telepathy, but it's different from how we do it.

Well tell her I'm glad she's safe, would you? Gilmore's pinning me to the floor and telling me off at the moment or I'd come do it myself. She's beautiful.

[Jean is quiet for a while, delivering the message and listening for the answer. There's warmth in his voice when he talks to Shiro again.]

She says that she's glad to hear you're safe as well and a shy thank you on the compliment. When you're able, I'm sure she'd love to meet you now that we're all back to ourselves.

[While Jean might not be as awkward as Markos, he does feel awkward now.]

And admittedly... I wouldn't mind getting to know you better either.

[Shiro's not good enough to have tone come through on the Network yet, but it's a pretty safe bet he's pleased.]

That sounds great. I'd like a chance to see both of you again. It's going to be weird sorting out what's actually you and what was Markos, but no weirder than figuring out what was Shura and what was me. Can't say that's my favorite way to travel. I hope you're doing okay after all of that.

Infiltrating was very disorienting at first. Sometimes, I still tend to get overwhelmed, but after you've spend over half of your Jaunts as someone else, you start to get used to it.

[At least Markos was a pretty good overlay, as opposed to a few others.]

I'm always willing to talk things through. It would also help me get some perspective on Markos I didn't notice before.

...How long have you been Traveling? You make it sound like you've been here a while.

Two years, in a few months. I've participated in eleven Jaunts so far and investigated in only four of them.

Two years?? And no sign of home anywhere during that time?

Actually, I've been home twice. Once while we were in transition from a jaunt to liminal, I visited and saw what happened at home and once I went to a dungeon to see what went on at home. Even if there were months between what happened at home, not that long went by here...

[Shiro goes quiet for several minutes. That outright contradicts a few things the Emperor and Empress told him, which makes him doubt them more than Jean. ]

That's really important intel. Thank you. I'm sorry you had to go through dungeons to see it. There's got to be a better way to check on what's happening than that.

I admit that I preferred the flash that I had between jaunt and liminal more than a whole dungeon, even if both resulted in actual injuries I suffered back home. Though in the end, I think I really needed the time in the dungeon...

Doesn't make it any more fun. [That and he has an inherent hatred of anything close to a jail-like dungeonesque imprisonment. ] My door's always open if you need to talk. I'm usually up at all hours, too, so don't worry about bugging me.

No, it definitely does not. I've... been to two dungeons of my own now. It doesn't get any easier.

Sure, I sleep. It just tends to be short. Lots of short catnaps means less time actually bunking down. Comes from being active military. You learn to sleep anywhere.

I think at some point, everyone will be faced with something. May it be a good thing or a bad... time will tell.

Not that much different than life, except for the contents. How long have you been military?

Officially, I've been a soldier for three months. Before that there was a three year training though.

It sure doesn't feel that little.

[Way too much has happened in such a short time.]

....So really you've been a soldier for five years and three months. That doesn't just stop because you haven't been constantly in a war.

[He's trying to be gentle, but how much of that translates through the monotone of the Network is debatable.]

... yeah, you're right. Besides, I've needed to fight while Traveling too so, it's not like I'm on a holiday.

Do you have anybody from home here? Friends? A commander? Troops from your unit?

There are three of the same squad here with me, who are all my important friends. We've known each other since training days.

Our commanding officers used to be around, but that was a long time ago.

[It's probably a good thing they're not here, really. There would be Words. ]

Good. I'm glad you have some friend who understand what you're going through. If you ever want to talk, though, like I said. Door's open. I'd like to hear more about your planet sometime anyway. Sounds like it must be a pretty rough place to grow up.

Yeah. I'm really glad and really lucky that I'm not here alone. [Even with all the friends he's made from 'other worlds', he wouldn't know what to do without them.]

I'd warn you in advance that it's not a very nice tale... but I guess you already have that suspicion.

Yeah, I’d gathered. That’s okay. We don’t have a lot of control over that sort of thing, and whether it’s happy or not, it happened. There’s no changing that now. We’ve just got to deal with it. And sometimes that works best when you have a team of friends to help you.
