I hate it when I have to bring the plan together

So yeah, I get it, we're going to this Harrowgate place and a lot of you had a bad time there. Thing is while I'm sure defense against the dark arts or whatever you are calling it is important, it sounds more like a class that you teach to dorky wizards. I think we need to work out practical logistics.

Some people are saying the network is gunna be a mess, and you know what that means a more low tech solution. I propose that on the second day we're there around noon, we choose a location, like a city hall, or bar, or something, and meet there with a password like "Hey, where's a guy get a pint around here?" or something else reasonable to ask that wouldn't freak out the locals. Then when we know what the heck is going on we can hammer out a better plan.

Trust me, you work as a hit man as long as I have you make backup plans to meet with your pals to get a job done. After a day we'll have better knowledge of the mess we're in and we can hammer something together then. I mean really, have any of these jaunts started killing people the day we hit the ground?

Hate to admit it but the guy's right. Normal spycraft is going to be as important if our cell phones and the Network fail.

Probably should have a more specific password than that, though. "where's a guy get a pint around here" is begging for false positives.

You saw nothing

I feel you but there are two problems with that: it's not specific enough and some of us aren't old enough to drink. Maybe specifying a particular rare soft drink?

And we've been dumped into the future of a world on the second jaunt before. Let's plan on not having reception and be pleasantly surprised if we do.

A bar might be too small for this many people. Also, several of us are not of age to even be allowed in.

If it is during the day, a school might suffice. That is, a school for adults. Scholars are all types and ages, and we can say the very young Travelers are our children. If there is no adult school, perhaps a library. Though, in the quiet, we risk being overheard, so we may do better to meet just outside of it. The same with places of worship. Where I am from, many libraries and schools are attached to places of worship.

I do not recommend meeting outside guard buildings or palaces. [ Police stations and city halls for the more modern. ] They will get suspicious of us.

The guards where I am from may prey on the people they are supposed to protect. If they choose their victim well, there is no justice to be had either.

They may overhear what we are saying. The things we talk of draw suspicion to us. Making portals, using magic, and generally being strangers to the land.

If I am myself, I can scout them out. I know how to avoid them if there is trouble.

The theater was the center of the tragedy and the terror. The lake the source. A local inn heralded everything. These places would be known to others, even outsiders. But please, please be careful.

Blessed Elua.

[sorry, he's wound a bit tight right now.]

I was not suggesting you go looking for them. I was stating locations which might be better off avoided or, should you choose to play the tourist, where you might ask after.

If you wish a map of the town as it was, I am filling one in and will leave it on the table on the second floor of the library tower. Give me half an hour and it should be complete, with what notes I can make beside it.

There are worse things than death - particularly in that gods-forsaken place.

At last, someone speaks sense. I support this plan.

I've not yet lost my mind on one of these jaunts, so if the pattern holds, I will still know myself when we arrive. [If.] And I'm skilled in scouting; I may be able to seek out those who don't in order to have a head count.

That's likely all we can plan for now. We'll have to make certain that it's enough.

Maps may be of at least some help with regard to the city's layout, although depending on when we would be arriving, the actual locations on them might end up being considerably out of date.

Of course.

I applaud your reasoning, sir. If I am myself, I'll take some time to scout out a suitable location. I'm adept at blending in when I want to, and I have a few magical talents separate from the Network or Liminal Space suited to protecting a private meeting space, if we need somewhere out of the way.

Oh, a successful amateur demon summoner? I'm all the more impressed that you seem to still be alive, or at least in possession of all your faculties.

I don't believe we've been introduced, but I can already tell you're a man of excellent taste. If you give me this gentleman's name and a good reference, I'll give you the same for the finest baker in Hell.
