[The Jaunt has only been over for perhaps half an hour when Allura's voice comes across the network, tight and clipped as though she has a white-knuckled grasp on control.]

I know some of us tend toward trigger happy.

[As evidenced by the chalk outline in the penalty box - not quite a universal sign for 'some poor soul was just murdered', but close.]

But I would strongly advise against killing someone who has been severed from the Network or from Liminal Space. It appears to...disrupt the mechanism by which we're resurrected if we die during a Jaunt. They will return in the Floor, aware for at least part of the process.

What happened? How did you find out about dying while severed?

...That much is clear. [ Come on now. But he glosses over that, assuming she doesn't want to pick over the details. He certainly hadn't, when he'd gone to the Floor. He'd written it down and put it in the Library instead. ]

So if we are concerned with preventing what happened, how do we tell if someone has been Liminally severed if we cannot ask them to try performing some Liminal ability? Psychic I know well enough...

I suspect that if someone's truly cut off, they wouldn't be any more susceptible to Liminal abilities than the natives of a world. There may be some way to detect the connection, just as some of us can detect an active portal, but until now no one's had cause to look.

I was hoping to figure out a way without having to try an ability on someone unwilling. [ He doesn't know how to interfere with someone's Hammerspace, but he knows that is possible. ] Or drawing the local's attention to myself. The Psychic Network is quicker, if someone answers to prove they're connected.

Which some people won't.

As I said, there may be an unintrusive way to detect if someone's still connected to Liminal Space - some sort of Detect Traveller spell, if you will. Now that we know there's a reason to look for that, it's something we can work on figuring out.

Have you some skill in Liminal matters? Anything that seems to be going in the direction of detection?

[ Come to think of it, he remembered speaking with someone who claimed he could find any Traveler specifically. He didn't know if he meant Liminally or Psychically. The few Liminal skills Altaïr knew we were grounded in physical effects, stood out too much to use subtly in front of Jaunt locals, and they didn't affect another Traveler. ]

I'm afraid my talents lie primarily in the realm of creation and repair.

[At least for the time being. There's reason to diversify now - even if, as far as she knows, she has the only reliable means of cutting anyone off from not only Liminal Space and the Network, but their Arcanum as well.]

It is easier, yes, when we can see the effects of our efforts. I know many Travelers who study the manipulation of Liminal matter well.

[ He thought particularly of Alcuin, who made beautiful costumes, and Thorne, who scienced the hell out of anything Liminal she could get her hands on. Altaïr's strengths lay elsewhere. ]

I am not sure if I can fully explore this possibility before the next Jaunt, but it is worth looking into. It is a matter of safety, this thing you have discovered.

I wouldn't call it easier to create substance from nothing. Just a combination of affinity and necessity.

Much necessity, as Arcana do not understand most of the everyday needs of us 'mortals.'

I suppose that's only to be expected, given that we don't truly understand theirs. It's possible that gulf isn't one that can truly be breached, even if both sides were inclined.
