Drizzt Asks Important Questions

This is Drizzt Do'Urden, and I have a simple question: what does one do in Liminal Space beside read books? It is too small to have anything left to explore, unless one tries to scale the wall.

[He does not sound frustrated, but in a good general mood. Drizzt seems more amused about it than anything, and he figures someone will have a good answer for him.]

I ask because I am afraid boredom begins to strike at my heart with my blades still for so long, and I need something more to combat it properly. Perhaps one of you has advice?

Drizzt suddenly has a computer deposited in his lap, and he just stares at it in awe. It takes him a few moments before he starts hunting and pecking with his index fingers, just to try it. Drizzt watches in wonder as words slowly appear on the screen: 'hello, i am drizzt.'.

"How do I write capital letters?" Drizzt looks down at the keyboard in confusion. "And what are those things above the comma and period?"

"...you can shift the letters to capital by holding down this one, see?" Jules decides not to show Drizzt cruise control for cool, instead showing him how the shift key works. "And those are...I think they're called brackets? They're used in code and stuff. Like what I'm using to talk to the arm."

Drizzt nods, remembering how Jules held down the key and typed another before. He takes a moment to look over the keyboard fully and get a better grasp of the layout. After a moment, he types 'Hello, I am Drizzt.' properly, then smiles over to Jules with a nod.

Then, he's back to looking at the keyboard again. "Why do some of the squares have two symbols? And other words?"

"Well, the ones with words do specific tasks, and the ones with other symbols, you use 'shift' to switch between the two." Jules illustrates this with the one and the exclamation point.

"This is so much to remember, but I believe I understand the 'Shift' at least," Drizzt stares at it, but he's also grinning. "You used your hands differently--is that a technique to use these things faster?"

[failgoyle]

"Yeah." Jules nods and types a little to show Drizzt how it's done. "You learn how to type like this, by memory, and it's way faster than hunting and pecking."

Hunting and pecking--the description makes him snort with amusement. It's quite descriptive. He watches curiously.

"It looks complicated--like almost learning a new way of writing entirely," Drizzt muses, then laughs. "Because it is, I suppose!!"

"Pretty much, yeah," Jules says, "They teach you how in school, and there are games and stuff to help people learn."

Drizzt pauses for a moment to try to comprehend it, and then he laughs a bit. "Games to learn? That sounds wonderful. I would like to go to a school like that sometime."

Jules laughs. "They didn't do the games very often. It was just a lot of listening to people talk, really."

"What was it like?" Drizzt asks, mind already wandering back to his youth--except a youth altered, happier, more full of love, as he tries to puzzle out what a school of a goodly race might be like.

[failgoyle]

"You'd wake up too early in the morning, sit there and listen to people drone on and on about some stuff you'd cared about and a lot of stuff you didn't, have a lab class if you were lucky--that's where you'd get to do stuff instead of just listen--have lunch, have...gym..." There's a shudder at gym class. Gym class was hell for a gawky nerd like him.

"It sounds worlds better than the school I attended," Drizzt states, his grin growing a bit weaker. "Mindless propaganda in the morning, training in battle in the afternoon, chores throughout the day and until we slept."

[failgoyle]

"Oh, we had the mindless propaganda in the mornings, with announcements and school spirit and the Pledge of Allegiance and stuff." Jules shrugs. "You'd learn to ignore it. But the closest thing we had to training in battle was just gym class. That's why gym class was awful."

Drizzt hardly calls that propaganda, just silliness. "What was so awful about gym class?"

[failgoyle]

"The jocks." Jules shudders. "The jocks, man, the jocks." He says this as though Drizzt should know exactly what this manner of foul beast is.

"The jocks?" Drizzt has no clue at all, looking utterly perplexed.

[failgoyle]

"The jocks." Jules nods. "Big, stupid, athletic guys who got all the girls and liked to beat up on the guys who weren't athletic just to prove that they deserved all the girls."

Drizzt does seem displeased by this, then says with a bit of an evil grin, "If I had gone to your school, I would have solved the problem for you and everyone else, and none of the adults would have ever found out."

Yes, enjoy that image of a teenage Drizzt beating up bullies. Because he would have. Or, more truthfully, he would have beaten one group of bullies so badly that the rest would immediately toe the line. This thought is far more pleasant.

There's one other part of that comment that intrigues him. "Boys and girls attend the same schools?"

"I dunno man, the way that place was run..." Jules shakes his head and seems a bit mystified by that question. "Well, yeah." He shrugs. "I guess there's all girls' schools and all boys' schools, and we had gym separate, but yeah, for the most part, the girls and boys were all together."

"I am drow; I have my ways," Drizzt reassures him, and then he shrugs with amusement. "There are separation of the sexes in Menzoberranzan. The fighter and wizard schools belonged to the males, but only females could go to the school that allowed them to become priestesses of Lolth. ... Your school is better by far, I assure you. Ours only taught evil."

"See, and with ours, they try to teach a bunch of stuff but mostly you just learn how to navigate the most complicated social minefield ever." Jules nods sagely.

[naturaltwohands]

"I'm certain drow are worse," Drizzt shrugs a bit. "You do not have to worry about others attempting to assassinate you, certainly."

[failgoyle]

"Only socially," Jules says cheerfully. "But that was more a thing the girls did, anyway."

[naturaltwohands]

"I did not realize that human schools were so difficult," Drizzt replies back cheerfully. "That makes me feel slightly better about my own."

He's joking, really.
