Check-in! (Check fin?)

Okay. Uh. Wow. I did not expect to be Investigating as a mermaid. Selkie. Finvestigating. You know.

I also did not expect to get all kinds of shiny mermaid knowledge dumped in my head the moment I ended up in the water, but that seems to have happened anyway. So if anyone wants to know anything about that shit, please do ask me. The most important thing is that the Thalassian Mermaid Queen, the Dread Empress or whatever, is as scary as fuck and our cover story should probably be that we ran away from her empire because we didn’t want to become cannibal berserkers. Which are a thing. Oh my god.

Anyway, it looks like we’re in the world with the Labyrinthine Shoals? Like, that’s evidently where we are. We’re in the Shoals. And I guess we’re mermaids? Some of us? Can anyone chime in to tell me if there’s anyone around who’s not a mermaid.

Actually, maybe we should make this a general check-in with, like, name and species. I’ll go first: this is Thorne and it looks like I’m a California sea lion selkie.

[Drizzt is good at being diplomatic around women.]

My apologizes for having forgotten you, as we have never discussed your powers in full. Do you know how your spells could fit into this adventure?

Miss Korra's elementalism will truly be more useful for sailing the ship, but my illusions and Yellow Magic should come into play when we inevitably meet up with natives. Disguises, misdirection, securing private rooms, that sort of thing.

I agree. You will likely be needed, even if I myself prefer the more straightforward route. Whatever keeps us alive.

[There is a reason why Justice picked him.]

Speaking of all that, I could probably stand to start enchanting Listening Coins for those of us who can't always rely on the network to communicate what we can hear around us. I don't think there's a limit to making those other than my stamina and supply of coinage...

Listening coins?

[Count him incredibly intrigued.]

Paired magic coins. One transmitter, one receiver. With the receiver, you can hear everything that happens around the transmitter.

I'd compare them to a one-way handheld radio set, but you're an elf sailor with a magical panther who fights with swords so I'm guessing that's meaningless to you.

The main benefit is that they're a decent subsitute for Sensory Livestreaming, small enough to be concealed on a person or somewhere else, and identical to regular coins.

[A bit of a laugh.]

You forgot ranger. But yes, that indeed means nothing to me. It at least sounds similar to the concept of wizards being able to talk at long distances, except one way.

They may also be useful as sentries or spies depending on how they are placed. Incredibly useful beyond just helping others without livestreaming.

[You can't see it, but Beatrice is nodding.]

Indeed, very much so. The only real limitation seems to be that they can't transmit from the worlds of Jaunts to Liminal Space or vice versa. And of course peoples' tendencies to pocket random change they see lying around.

If the space between the worlds is different planes entirely, I could see why not. ... And I could also see why we will have to hide them well unless that is exactly what we intend to happen.

Leaving one around as "treasure" is a practical way to plant a bug, but you also have to consider the noise you get from a pocket full of jingling coins...

[Drizzt will wince about that idea in person.]

... Point well taken.
