Drizzt Asks Important Questions

This is Drizzt Do'Urden, and I have a simple question: what does one do in Liminal Space beside read books? It is too small to have anything left to explore, unless one tries to scale the wall.

[He does not sound frustrated, but in a good general mood. Drizzt seems more amused about it than anything, and he figures someone will have a good answer for him.]

I ask because I am afraid boredom begins to strike at my heart with my blades still for so long, and I need something more to combat it properly. Perhaps one of you has advice?

"That's why it bends! Because the water bends the waves," Jules says sagely. "Some stuff bends it, other stuff lets it pass through just fine."

The young ranger's brows furrow in confusion and stay there. "... But I see no waves in light?"

[failgoyle]

"You can't see 'em," Jules points out. "That's because they're like...really small and hard to see with the naked eye. You need equipment and stuff to really get a sense of it."

[naturaltwohands]

"They must be very small," Drizzt states after a long moment, squinting at the screen again. "I wonder if wizards and scholars back home know of this."

[failgoyle]

"I dunno," Jules says, "I'm not really sure how that sort of thing gets discovered in the first place."

[naturaltwohands]

"If only the Workshop's library covered such things," Drizzt muses for a moment, then looks at Jules instead of the screen. "... do you think it may?"

[failgoyle]

"You know," Jules says, "it might. It's not like I've needed to look anything up there before."

[naturaltwohands]

"I may have to explore it in more detail, then," Drizzt makes a mental note to search for such knowledge, glancing back to the screen. "Now I am curious."

[failgoyle]

"It's worth checking out if you are, yeah." Jules nods. It seems a safe sort of curiosity to indulge, really.

"Later, though," Drizzt tilts his head at it, squinting as he tries to understand what is being done on it. "I'm afraid I wish to ask a few dozen or more questions on what you are doing now."

Jules laughs. "Oh, sure, sure." He's tapping away happily at the computer. Occasionally, the arm will twitch. "I'm making a lot of progress, anyway..."

Yes, that is entirely it.

Drizzt looks at the keyboard, then looks at the screen, then looks at the keyboard. Specifically, he looks at how Jules hands are moving across it. Then he grins wide in delight, suddenly understanding one thing just a little bit more.

"Your words are appearing on the screen!"

"Oh!" This is the most obvious thing in the world to Jules, and it is easy for him to forget that this too would be a new thing. "See, I hit the letter here..." He pushes a button on the keyboard. "And then it comes up there."

Drizzt follows the movement with a grin of wide awe, glancing up at the screen then down again. "It--"

He stares at it, realizing what he's seeing all the more. "You can remove things just as easily? I saw you do it earlier!"

This drow's mind is blown. Completely blown.

"Huh? Oh, yeah." Jules reaches out and hits the Backspace button. "Like that." He opens up another window, this one to a word processor. "You want to try?"

"Can I?" Drizzt looks back up to Jules, eyes wide in curiosity. "You do not mind the delay in your work?"

"Nah." Jules shrugs and passes the laptop over. "It's not like it's time-sensitive or anything. Just something I'm messing around with."

Drizzt suddenly has a computer deposited in his lap, and he just stares at it in awe. It takes him a few moments before he starts hunting and pecking with his index fingers, just to try it. Drizzt watches in wonder as words slowly appear on the screen: 'hello, i am drizzt.'.

"How do I write capital letters?" Drizzt looks down at the keyboard in confusion. "And what are those things above the comma and period?"

"...you can shift the letters to capital by holding down this one, see?" Jules decides not to show Drizzt cruise control for cool, instead showing him how the shift key works. "And those are...I think they're called brackets? They're used in code and stuff. Like what I'm using to talk to the arm."

Drizzt nods, remembering how Jules held down the key and typed another before. He takes a moment to look over the keyboard fully and get a better grasp of the layout. After a moment, he types 'Hello, I am Drizzt.' properly, then smiles over to Jules with a nod.

Then, he's back to looking at the keyboard again. "Why do some of the squares have two symbols? And other words?"

"Well, the ones with words do specific tasks, and the ones with other symbols, you use 'shift' to switch between the two." Jules illustrates this with the one and the exclamation point.

"This is so much to remember, but I believe I understand the 'Shift' at least," Drizzt stares at it, but he's also grinning. "You used your hands differently--is that a technique to use these things faster?"

[failgoyle]

"Yeah." Jules nods and types a little to show Drizzt how it's done. "You learn how to type like this, by memory, and it's way faster than hunting and pecking."

Hunting and pecking--the description makes him snort with amusement. It's quite descriptive. He watches curiously.

"It looks complicated--like almost learning a new way of writing entirely," Drizzt muses, then laughs. "Because it is, I suppose!!"

"Pretty much, yeah," Jules says, "They teach you how in school, and there are games and stuff to help people learn."
