Walkabout: Desert Survival 101

Seeing as most of you have likely not dealt with a desert climate for extended periods of time, or have grow up with 21st century conveniences to keep comfortable, I suppose I should share some of the important guidelines for living in this sort of area.

Before anyone complains about me telling you all what to do, I was born in what 21st century maps call Syria, in the 12th century. It is a similar environment and air conditioning was non existent.

You can feel free to ignore my advice, but I will not have pity if you become ill from the heat or sun.

[he pauses for a moment.]

Water is important, if you have to be outside for any length of time bring some with you and drink it. Even if you are not thirsty yet, if it has been some time since the last drink do so. Death of thirst in this sort of heat comes quickly.

If you go outside, wear shoes. Burning the soles of your feet is horrific at best, amputation at worst. Also, do not lay on the ground directly if it can be helped, the ground will always be hotter than the air after baking in the sun for so many hours.

Keeping covered is also wise, long sleeves and long pants will prevent sunburn. They have proper fabrics for this that allow air to come close to the body. Sweat is not your enemy, it means that you are still well hydrated and your body is keeping himself cool.

In that same vein, make sure that it is cloth against your skin not leather or metal. I have seen many a crusader in his armor fall off his horse in the height of summer because it has become too hot.

During the height of the day, whenever that comes, do what you can to stay inside. Sleep if you can, read, stay in shade until the heat passes.

[another pause]

As hot as it is during this long day, night will be as cold. It may become cold enough to frost if the night is as long as day, and having layers available to you is wise as the sun sets.

I would not be surprised if the bulk of the work around here is done in the evening and in to the night.

Most importantly, do not go anywhere alone if it can be helped. Tell someone where you are going, a desert is a more dangerous place than a city and we do not know what the terrain is yet like or what other creatures live in in the area beside the dragons.

If you have questions, ask them. I will answer what I can.

I plan on making a trip to get the lay of the land at some point before the hatching, if anyone wishes to go out with me to the wilds.

(no subject)

Now that I can have everyone's attention, a little good news.

Since Jules and I both needed the occasional break from the Bronze Age, I'm proud to announce Liminal Intranet is now up and running. Even I'm not good enough to hook it up to proper Internet, as that would involve punching dimensional holes that are probably beyond our reach, but it should at least be a boon to Project Infopool.

Servers are in my rooms, so they won't be going anywhere even if I do. You'll have to provide your own computers, though.

I'm in a horse

[ The current Liminal Space is seen from the eyes of Altaïr, who is standing in the main chamber, the thundering of hooves and storm echoing around him. Luckily for those on the Network, his view does not shake as he keeps a steady balance. He deliberately does not look at the bronze organs, which... move as living organs do. He speaks in his usual serious tones, though he breathes like he's just finished with a run. ]

If this is indeed the Wooden Horse, the next Jaunt will not be a happy one. The Trojan War is not a place any of us want to be. We must be cautious. The lengths people will go to inflict suffering on one another are only limited by the imagination.

When we are taken to the next world, try talking to me on the Network. If you cannot make a portal into Liminal Space, I will find places for us to hide until we are sure of safety in that land.

[Cassandra does not like using the network. She especially does not like initiating contact over the network, because she's not good with words and she knows it (and the network is nothing but words). Unfortunately, this is one of those instances where it's necessary for her to do so, because the things she's hearing stand to affect the remaining Investigators directly.]

Are both of you still with the film crew? If you are, then you need to be careful, because the vampires and werewolves are planning to retaliate against them to prevent being exposed.

... and then Luke learned psychic bridge [WALKABOUT]

Hello?

[That psychic voice belongs to precisely none of the Investigators currently in Sarmatia... but Callum and Cassandra, at least, might recognize it from the pizza place liminal.]

Hi? This is Luke Skywalker? Can anyone hear me?

[walkabout]

 Are you fucking kidding me.

[hello, Walkabout. Looks like Melissa is not terribly happy with where they've landed! Well, she's not super happy under normal circumstances, but even less so now.]

...alright, fine. Who else wound up here?

~ failing at introductions ~

[ Here's a new psychic "voice." Calm and collected. Or just ... not transmitting tone very well. Hm. ]

How do I create something from liminal material?

[ ... That's it. That's the whole message. :|b ]

a couple days into Noob Influx

...It occurs to me that the noobs and returning folks wouldn't necessarily know about the workshop.

Leo set it up while he was here, and once he had the space he opened up bedrooms for literally everyone. They're not super-fancy and now that he's gone there's not really any way to alter the space, but they're not bad rooms for all that - bed, desk, dresser, shared bathroom with one other room.

Some of us have moved out into our own spaces since then, but... I'm sure he wouldn't want it sitting empty. Don't feel like you have to sleep in Liminal, if you just got here-slash-back. I don't know if the pointing hands are still a thing with Leo gone, but the workshop itself is pretty hard to miss.
