So, uh, is there, like, anybody here who knows medicine? Or at the very least someone else who knows first aid? Healing magic won't work. Magic anything won't work. It's kind of complicated. Or maybe not that complicated?

Well, okay, basically it's that Imriel picked up this passive power negation thing when he was in Newport, which means that anyone in his immediate vicinity loses their magic. And you can't cast stuff from a distance on him either. Which is a problem, because that's, like, the main way people are healing things here.

(Oh, right, if you don't know, Imriel's one of the three youngest Travelers. You'll be able to recognize him because he's the only ten-year-old we have that's not Japanese.)

Anyway, uh, I found that stuff out today because I had to patch him up and my regular way of healing people didn't work and I had to bust out the kit. And then I thought, 'oh shit, what if I infiltrate next Jaunt, who's going to patch him up if he gets hurt then?'

So. Uh. Hopefully there's one of you? Otherwise, I'll see if I can teach people what I know just in case. I took classes from the Red Cross a few years ago, if you want my first aiding cred.

Okay, so. What I wasn't going to tell everybody, but I really think all of you guys should know--Alcuin and Melissa because you've both taken care of him, Phedre and Joscelin because he's from the same place you are--is that patching Imriel up meant having to get his pants off because he had a cut on his upper leg and. Well. There's a brand on his butt. Somebody branded his butt. And above that there were these other scars that I think maybe came from being lashed or something. And. Well.

Some really terrible shit must have happened to him at some point.

First aid was part of the health classes I taught, and teachers do need to be certified. So I know that much, at least.

I think my overlay met him there. Her healing didn't work on him--

Um, I know how to bandage injuries, and I've got wound wash, and I know what healing plants heal what, but my training is with beasts, not humans. Not everything's the same.

And I'm running out of plants for things too.

Okay, well, if you bring me your supplies, I could see about replicating them. Or teaching you how to. I know how to make things from liminal material.

Treating illnesses beyond 'drink fluids and rest' is beyond me, but I do know how to mend wounds and deal with general battlefield injuries.

Relying on magic alone was never a wise course of action anyway, for both this reason and that there is the distinct possibility that people won't trust magical healing.

And yeah, I know. But it's damn handy to have around, so I don't blame people for having it as their first option.

I know a thing or two about medicine, darling, but I'm afraid most of my information is about a century out of date.

I did quite a lot of study when I was working on Moreau.

If you know to wash and sterilize things, you've already got a leg up on your contemporaries.

I'm trained in field medicine and emergency response.

Although I feel compelled to note that many of the worlds we visit do have trained medical professionals of their own. While the skills and equipment we can bring to bear are sufficient for routine injury, it would be worth our while to take stock of the local options in case someone is injured beyond what we can reasonably treat - or in case there is no one available with the necessary skills.

Yeah! Makes sense. I mean, some of the places we might not want to go for doctors--like Rome--but some of the others probably do have emergency rooms and shit like that.

I don't know anything about this but since you mention it, it wouldn't hurt to learn from one of the people who volunteered here. I'm never going to do the crazy stuff people do with magic, but if I'm gonna be support-girl I should find a way to sort of cover it.

Unfortunately all I can offer is basic patching up, just enough to keep someone from dying before they can be attended to by a proper physician. The supplies I have were limited to what I was caring at the time of my arrival, and I have already used some of them. However, and I am sure Leonardo will agree, any of the medical textbooks in the library are at your disposal, and Riddick may be able to forge the tools illustrated. You might ask Leonardo the extent of his knowledge yourself; his anatomical drawings are very well-informed.

And yeah, duh, of course I should have thought of Leo--I mean, I know all this shit. I've seen his anatomical drawings in books and they're amazeballs. I've just been so used to him using magic for this stuff.
