[There's a new voice piping up on the psychic network, a nervous and stressed-sounding voice. One who has spoken up on the network before, though at least this time she isn't screaming.]

I'm stuck. I'm stuck in liminal space. I-- I don't know how to get out and there's this awful music and I keep sinking in the water or whatever it is and can someone come and get me? Please?

[Guess what. Jolie is back from being torn apart by a Stricken, and she still doesn't know how to make portals. She may also kind of sound like she might be trying not to cry. Oops.]

It might be time to start considering working on the buddy system.

I've been looking into the disappearing locals, and a few things stand out: they all vanished suddenly, they all vanished from near the shore, and the last time any of them were seen was just before our nightly monster serenade.

I don't know whether it's driving something out of the water to snatch people or luring people in, but either way, wandering around alone seems like a damn good way to wind up on the missing persons list.

Okay. Uh. Wow. I did not expect to be Investigating as a mermaid. Selkie. Finvestigating. You know.

I also did not expect to get all kinds of shiny mermaid knowledge dumped in my head the moment I ended up in the water, but that seems to have happened anyway. So if anyone wants to know anything about that shit, please do ask me. The most important thing is that the Thalassian Mermaid Queen, the Dread Empress or whatever, is as scary as fuck and our cover story should probably be that we ran away from her empire because we didn’t want to become cannibal berserkers. Which are a thing. Oh my god.

Anyway, it looks like we’re in the world with the Labyrinthine Shoals? Like, that’s evidently where we are. We’re in the Shoals. And I guess we’re mermaids? Some of us? Can anyone chime in to tell me if there’s anyone around who’s not a mermaid.

Actually, maybe we should make this a general check-in with, like, name and species. I’ll go first: this is Thorne and it looks like I’m a California sea lion selkie.

Everyone, I...I have an update on what was going on with Jules.

[There's a pause, as if she's steeling herself.]

He...he was attacked by someone named Matthew, though Jules thinks that he may have been in the mindset of his counterpart, Masshuu. That person, I presume is the one who was trying to hurt Jules with fire. There was another person who saved him before I could reach the area, but...

[A heavy silence for a few moments.]

Neither survived. I don't know who rescued him but...I am sorry to anyone who might've known either of those two men. Had I been there sooner...

[The implications are left hanging in the silent air on the Network.]

I know we all have bigger and better things on our minds at the moment, but one question for everyone.

How long do portals usually stay open? I realized that I have kept one open for about three hours while I was a bit caught up in a book.

It... does not seem to be of much importance, but it was certainly curious.

We managed to make it in and out of the Council offices in one piece.

[That's the sort of statement that should sound celebratory. It doesn't. Even with the flattened affect provided by the psychic network's rendering of tone, there's an undercurrent of carefully restrained anger.]

The plague's gone. The plague's been gone for almost two hundred years. The Council's been keeping quarantine all this time in order to keep from having to admit they've been drugging people blind for no good reason for centuries. Their biggest concern right now is the fact that more and more kids are being born resistant to their drugs.

That's where the Duskling population boom is coming from. And the kids born on the wrong side of twilight - apparently, immunity to one side doesn't guarantee immunity to the other, and they aren't all that careful about making sure their shipments don't get mixed up, since an adult probably isn't going to notice any change after a few doses of the wrong thing.

So we've learned a few things.

That Tithe we've been hearing about? Didn't always used to basically exile. Actually it was a diplomatic thing. The Tithe would go to the White Tower for this thing called the Concordance, where they meet up with all the other Tithes from the other city-states in the Federation of, uh, Hel. Not Hell Hel, mind you - so don't you bloody start screaming at us, Jules - just an unfortunate resemblance.

It was one of the Tithes that brought the plague.

Jules, that's not an invitation to start screaming either, this was goddamn ages ago. If this thing's still around it's clearly not running rampant.

Anyway. The big symptom of the plague was lesions, but they found that sunlight halted the progress of the disease and made them less painful. So they made the infected keep to the day, and the uninfected to the night. This whole Lightside / Darkside divide? That's their quarantine. And they used supplements in the food to enforce it - they made the infected blind at night, and gave the uninfected better night vision. And I think they're still doing it. There's a guarded facility in Gritta that's making a lot of shipments to grocery stores, but they don't mix the Lightsider and the Darksider shipments.

But what we do not understand is why the quarantine is still in place. Because if there was still a need for it, the Dusklings screw it all up. Apparently there were only a few dozen of them after the plague, but there's a whole district of them now - and they're running around all over the city, interacting with both sides. If the plague was still around, they'd be spreading it. Either they're doing a phenomenally bad job of enforcing their quarantine, or they're keeping this divide up for other reasons.

I think it's unlikely that the plague's still around, but just in case I've written down some details of how they tested for it. It's not my thing, though, so I'd appreciate it if someone who understands this sort of thing better would take a look.

[[ooc: takes place late in the 2nd mingle, after this thread. I think I've managed to have Matthew repeat all the important information, but feel free to poke me if there's something I've forgotten that needs to get mentioned]

[Big surprise, Jules is yelling again. He's sensory livestreaming the opera, only the angle suggests that he's actually on stage. Any visible parts of his body look like stone, and he's clearly staying very, very still.]

This is the worst! They think I'm a prop, and now I'm stuck!

This is terrible! Absolutely terrible! Now I've got to sit here and watch this with a bunch of people watching me!

[The livestreaming of the opera will continue until someone yells at him sufficiently.]

So. Two things, good news and a serious question.

Good news first; Drizzt is out of jail and safely with his father and I. Nobody got injured and it all went pretty well all said and done.

And the serious question:

[Wait for it.]

....does anybody know how to perform a wedding?

Next week. Ish. Or sooner?

...I think I got it now...

[Don't mind that, fellow Investigators; she's just mentally steeling herself.]

Good morning, everyone. I think that, since we've had some time to get settled into this world, we should start checking up with each other to see what we've learned so far. Even if it's doesn't seem important now, it may be later.

Also...if anyone knows who among us might be their other selves, it might be best to share that with everyone. That way, we can avoid any potential confusion. After all, we don't want the wrong people learning about who we really are.

By the Crone's saggy, dessicated paps! Those mangy, fly-struck, thrush-footed, worm-begot sons of dungheaps! To Gifnu's deepest hells with you, Trumps. You--

[The tirade continues with more creative swearing and cursing, even slipping into different languages a time or two, for a solid minute more. But eventually Pod runs out of steam, and there's a moment of silence before she addresses the network with more calm.]

So do these Trumps mock everyone with their overlays or am I just that unlucky?

Okay, kids. Don't know how many of you know shit about livin' where there's no roads or pre-packaged dinners, but this is what I've been doin' half my life. So listen up.

First thing we need is water. Found that. It's south-east from where we landed, looks like this.

[And he gives them a livestream of the brook he's found trickling out to the ocean proper. It's not like your normal livestream, in that Riddick's vision is tinged bright violet, seems to focus mostly on heat and movement, and if you can parse through both of those things, you can tell it is completely unhampered by the darkness.]

Nobody come down here yet, though. There's predators on this island, or there were last time I was here, and most of 'em are nocturnal. So stay put and stay together until dawn, much as you can. Might even be smart if we did our sleeping in liminal space, until we find some sign there's still people here.

Second thing we need is food. There's animals here we can hunt, and probably some edible fruit and shit, but we've got liminal space, too. Anybody who can make food we can actually eat, do that. I'm gonna pop into liminal space to give it a shot myself, here, in a minute.

There used to be people on this island. Used to be, it was kept protected by a force field thing. I think that's probably still there, so don't go swimmin' out too far, or you'll hit it. Nasty shit happens when you do that. Ain't seen any sign of the people yet, but that don't mean they ain't here somewhere. Think that should probably be thing number three. Findin' out where the people went to, if they're still here somewhere. Might be a good idea to start searching this place in the morning.

Okay.

This looks pretty weird for a Jaunt, huh? I don't see most of the people I expected to, or anyone native. It's almost like we were shipwrecked without a ship, right?

Anyway, this kinda thing usually goes badly pretty fast in books and movies, so I think we should get organized early. Everyone who can hear me, let's please gather up and figure out who's here, what we can do, and what we're supposed to be doing. I haven't seen any natives or people acting like natives at all, so I don't think we have to worry about being suspicious.

The first thing I think we want to worry about is who's here and what we know how to do. I've never even been so much as camping, but I do know how to coordinate people when we're exploring. Got all kinds of magic stuff to do things like mapping, detecting monsters (which'll probably work on like, animals too), giving information to and from people really fast, and uh, literally helping anyone with anything. I don't totally understand the how on that last one, but basically anything you can do I can figure out a way to help.

Oh, and if we can't find food or water easily, I can turn into a Synthetic and save a little bit of that.

So yeah, sorry this isn't the most professional thing, but I think we should all check in and coordinate stuff here, so we can figure out what we're going to do...

[She forgot to mention her own name, though.]

((OOC: And oh yeah, feel free to use this post to ICly organize exploration groups if you aren't doing that elsewhere/off-camera.))
